Webster: Elwood Monson, 80, of Webster died Monday, March 18, 2013, at Strand Kjorsvig care center in Roslyn.
His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Webster, with the Rev. Daniel Ostercamp officiating.
Burial will be at St. Otto's Cemetery in Webster.
Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., and Saturday at the church prior to the services.
Elwood Odean Monson was born Sunday, Sept. 4, 1932, to Peter and Inga (Kleven) Monson in Roslyn, S.D. He was baptized and confirmed at Fron Lutheran Church. He attended country school near his home and, after the death of his father, he, along with his brother, farmed the family farm. He worked for Vevang Construction and then began working for Pete Monzel Company as a truck driver.
On Sept. 20, 1972, he was united in marriage to Shirley Horst Dolney at Watertown. After their marriage, the couple made their home in Webster, where Elwood continued working for Pete Monzel. In 1979, they purchased Bob's Bar, which they renamed the Frontier, and operated the business as a supper club. Shirley passed away in 1997. After her death, he sold the business to their son, and Elwood worked there part-time until 2009. He entered Strand-Kjorsvig Community Rest Home in November 2012.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Webster. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, woodworking, yard work, driving around town and having coffee with many of his friends.
Elwood passed away Monday, March 18, 2013, at Roslyn, at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 14 days.
Survivors include two sons: Steve Dolney of Webster and Doug (Michele) Monson of Sioux Falls; two brothers: Percival Monson of Webster and Roger (Sharon) Monson of Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister, Orlean Lardy of Milbank; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
