Funeral service for Irene Elinore Jones, 91, of Aberdeen will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Houghton. Pastor Jay Haaland officiating. Burial will be in the Houghton Cemetery.
Irene died on Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.
Visitation is from 1 to 7 p.m., with family present from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Irene Elinore (Hanson) Jones was born Oct. 25, 1921, to Charles and Julia Hanson. She was the first person baptized in the Trinity Lutheran Church of Houghton.
Irene graduated from the Lunzman grade school near Columbia and the Columbia High School in 1940. Irene attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen and taught school in Walworth County and Brown County.
On June 8, 1943, Irene married Capt. Raymond H Jones of Houghton at the Scandinavia Lutheran Church near Bath. They were stationed at Williams Field Air Force Base near Chandler, Ariz. Irene was a Red Cross nurse's aide in Mesa, Ariz., during World War II. In 1955, Irene and Raymond moved back to farm near Houghton.
Irene taught Sunday school in the Trinity Lutheran Church for many years, was a member of Bible Study and held many offices in the Trinity Lutheran E.L.C. Circle.
She was also on the Lansing-Shelby township election board. She was a longtime member of the 3 in 1 Extension Club and received her 25-year pin.
Irene and Raymond loved to travel and were members of the Good Sam Travel Club in Aberdeen. They took many bus trips with the Aberdeen Senior Citizens Center. She enjoyed playing cards, games, loved to cook and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was a very generous and giving person. Her grandchildren were very special to her and they loved her banana cupcakes.
Survivors are one daughter, Karen Oleson (Gene), Rapid City; son, Howard Jones (Sandra), Reston, Va.; son, Stewart Jones (Valerie), Aberdeen; and one sister, Colleen Stange. Irene is survived by seven grandsons: Kendall (Colleen) Pfutzenreuter, McKinney, Texas, Gregory (Jeanine) Jones, Newport Coast, Calif., Stephen Jones, Reston, Va., Douglas Jones, Jacksonville, Fla., Mitchel Jones, Noah Jones, Isaac Jones, all of Aberdeen; and three great-grandchildren: Ty, Tatum and Colt Pfutzenreuter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Jones; parents; one daughter, Janet Kay Jones; five brothers; three sisters; and one granddaughter, Rachel Marie Jones.
Memorials are preferred to the Houghton Cemetery.
