Mass of Christian burial for Dennis Edward Johnson, 89, of Aberdeen will be 10 a.m. Monday, April 1, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 409 Third Ave. S.E., Aberdeen, with Father Shaun Haggerty presiding. Burial follows at Sacred Heart Cemetery with Military Rites being conducted by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post No. 24 of Aberdeen.
Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W., Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, will be 4-5 p.m. Sunday, with a liturgical wake service at 5 p.m. Visitation continues for one hour before Mass on Monday. No visitation will be held at Schriver's Memorial Mortuary. Memorials are preferred to Avera North Plains Hospice in Aberdeen.
Dennis passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at his home. Blessed be his memory.
Dennis Edward Johnson was born on March 11, 1924, to Harold Sylvester and Edna (Grein) Johnson at Bancroft, Iowa. He was raised in this area and attended St. John's High School in Bancroft.
Dennis entered the U.S. Marine Corps on June 10, 1942. He earned the rank of Sergeant and was recognized with the Air Medal Award for his distinguished service.
Dennis was united in marriage to Elizabeth Payne on Nov. 30, 1944, in Washington, D.C. Upon receiving his honorable discharge on June 10, 1946, in Cherry Point, N.C., the couple moved to a farm west of Scatterwood Lake. Dennis continued farming until 2005, when he retired and moved to Aberdeen.
Dennis was a member of the Mansfield Legion Post No. 289 in Mansfield. He enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. He especially loved tending to his garden and was considered to be a master gardener.
Blessed to have shared his life are his wife of over 68 years, Elizabeth Johnson, of Aberdeen; one son, Jerome (Joyce) Johnson, of Los Gatos, Calif.; three daughters: Dennise (Dennis) Harmon of Chelsea, Lorraine (Dan) Keller of Eagle Butte and Marie (Greg) Brewer of Hermosa; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Dennis' parents; two brothers; five sisters; and one great-grandchild, Cornelius Brewer, preceded him in death.
