Kathryn Mary Herman was born Sept. 17, 1961, in Aberdeen to LeVern and Anna (Frost) Herman. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. She met Steve Vance, her soul mate, in 1979, at Lu's Pizza and they were married on July 11, 1981, in Aberdeen. She chose to devote her life to the compassion of others through a career in nursing, graduating from Presentation College in 1993. They moved to Denver, Colo., where she took a job caring for veterans. In 2008, they moved back to Aberdeen to be close to family. She worked for Aberdeen Health and Rehab and Avera Mother Joseph Manor until the time of her death. In April 2010, she began a war against breast cancer and fought it courageously to be pronounced victorious and, in May 2011, went into remission. In honor of her victory, they renewed their wedding vows in July 2011.
Kathy loved spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, mother and brothers and sisters. She was a loving, caring and devoted person who was committed to serving the elderly. She loved animals, coffee and shopping (much to Steve's chagrin).
Grateful for having shared Kathy's life are her husband, Steven Vance, Aberdeen; sons: Kenneth (Jeniece) Vance, Dustin Vance, both of Aberdeen, Nikolas Vance (Brandi Maxwell), Denver, Colo.; grandchildren: Grace, Eden, Arica, Kenneth, Jr. and Daniel; mother, Anna Herman, Aberdeen: brothers and sisters: Ronald Pete (Connie) Herman, Aberdeen, Linda Jensen, Golden Valley, Minn., James (Kathi) Herman, Aberdeen, Douglas Herman, Aurora, Colo., Calvin Herman, Lakewood, Colo., Richard (Gerri) Herman, Brooklyn Park, Minn., Michael (Melissa) Herman, Aberdeen, John Herman, Hopkins, Minn., Robert (Kathleen) Herman, Chandler, Ariz., Scott Herman (Wanda Anderson) Mina and Nicki Herman, Aberdeen; several nieces and nephews.
