Catherine "Katie" Brendel Gross was born to Walter and Bernadine (Geier) Brendel on Sept. 14, 1919, in Aberdeen, S.D. She met her future husband while playing softball and they married two years later on Jan. 25, 1938, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aberdeen. Catherine enjoyed many family hunting trips and spent many hours riding her favorite horse, Lady. She was a floral designer for over 40 years and worked at Siebrecht Florist until they closed in 1982. After her retirement from Siebrecht, she fulfilled her dream by starting her own floral shop in her home and named it K&A Mini Flower Shop.
Katie was loved by all, and her infectious smile warmed all the hearts of those who were blessed to have known her. She was an avid rosary attendee at Sacred Heart Church. She and Andy also enjoyed being members of the Aberdeen Moose Lodge for many years. Her greatest joy in life, however, was watching her grandchildren grow up. Katie and Andy shared over 57 years of marriage before he passed away in February 1995. After years of being without her beloved husband Andy, she is now in his loving arms.
Survivors include her two sons, Robert A. Gross and Donald O. of Aberdeen; daughter-in-law, Alene Grohnke-Gross; her brother, George Brendel; her sister, Bea (Larry) Hawkins; eight grandchildren: Wendy DeJong, Lory Keeney, Kristy Koch, Roger Gross, Richard Gross, Rose Ann Zabel, Susan Mehlhaff and Patrick Gross; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Andy; five sisters; one brother; one daughter-in-law; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
Casketbearers will be Roger Gross, Richard Gross, Tyler Stuchl, Jordan Gross, Trevor Keeney, Gavin Stuchl, Justin Keeney and Pat Gross.
