Irene E. Heer, 92, of Eureka, died Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at the Hosmer Senior Citizens Home. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2013, at Zion American Lutheran Church, Eureka, with Pastor Ryan Gage leading the service. Burial follows at the church cemetery. Organist will be Ronda Lapp and ushers will be Lloyd Miller and Ervin Gebhardt.
Visitation will be at Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday and resume at the church at 1:30 p.m.
Irene Elsie Kemmet, daughter of Katharina (Teske) and Christian Kemmet, was born at their farm 2 3/4 miles west of Eureka on Dec. 13, 1920. She was brought up on the farm and attended country school. She then helped her parents on the farm. Irene married Clifford Heer at Zion Lutheran Church on Oct. 31, 1943. They settled on the Heer farm 9 1/2 miles north or Eureka, that they purchased in 1946. They lived and farmed there until 1976, when they sold the farm to Jim and Jean Mulder and moved into Eureka. While in town, Irene was employed at the Luncheonette, Lutheran Home and the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center. Irene retired in the mid-1990s. Since December 2012, she lived at the Senior Citizens Home.
Irene's hobbies included reading, crocheting, embroidering and quilting. She enjoyed farm life.
Irene is survived by one daughter, Bonnie (Terry) Schutz of Eureka; sister-in-law, Alvina Pulliam of California; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father in January 1951; her mother on Nov. 6, 1966; her husband on Aug. 26, 2000; and an infant brother.
Honorary bearers will be the Hosmer Senior Citizens Home staff.
Casketbearers will be: Mike Neuharth, Dennis Heupel and Craig Gab of Eureka, Dale Schutz of Hosmer and Drew Schutz of Mobridge,
