Funeral service for Orville "Butch" Dickey, 88, of Aberdeen and formerly of Brentford, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at the Brentford Congregational UCC. Pastor Jon Damaska officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Butch died on Friday, May 17, 2013, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital.
Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m., with family present from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Orville Andrew "Butch" Dickey was born Nov. 8, 1924, to John and Olga (Jensen) Dickey. He attended country school until it was necessary for him to help on the family farm.
On July 2, 1944, Butch married LaVerne Wall. Butch then worked on the Swede Hammer farm until going to work for South Dakota Wheat Growers as a truck driver, which he did for 3 years, before being promoted to manager of the Mellette-Brentford elevators, which he served for 30 years. Butch retired from South Dakota Wheat Growers on Dec. 31, 1986. In the spring of 1987, he went to work on the Dennis Haven Farm and also continued to serve on the Brentford Volunteer Fire Department, of which he was fire chief for 20 years.
Butch and LaVerne moved to Aberdeen in August 2002. Butch continued to plant his yearly garden until his eyesight failed him.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, LaVerne Dickey; son, Dan (Marty) Dickey; daughter, Yvonne (Jim ) Franzen; grandsons: Wayne (Michelle) Owens, Jason (Amy) Owens; granddaughter, Michelle (Dan) Schmidt; great-grandchildren: Isaac, Averi, Eden, Estee Schmidt, Olivia, Sydney, Hayden Owens; and sisters: Betty Lou (Devin) Olson and Dorothy McQustion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Olga Dickey; brother, Elmer; and sisters: Ruth and Delores.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials.
