Vaudis Elaine Ivey passed away peacefully and went to Heaven on Jan. 13, 2013, following a brief illness at the age of 81 years and 11 months.

As she wished, she was cremated and her family will have a memorial service for all who knew and loved her on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W., Aberdeen.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the mortuary.

Vaudis was the third child of Leo and Inga Johanna (Olson) Dashel. She was born Feb. 21, 1931, in Aberdeen. She attended Aberdeen public schools and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1949. In high school, she participated in girl's chorus, a cappella, and played cello in the school orchestra. She loved roller skating and her skating partners claimed she "skated on feathers." While attending high school, she also worked at the Franklyn Dairy and later at the National Tea grocery store. Following graduation, she worked for the International Harvester Company.

She met and married Dr. Richard J. Ivey in May 1951. Vaudis was fortunate to be a "stay-at-home" mom to four children: Richard, Thomas, Susan and Robert. For many years, she was a member of the Aberdeen women's daytime bowling league and was an excellent bowler. She enjoyed traveling with her family to Lake Lizzy in Minnesota for the Ivey family summer vacation. Later in life, she enjoyed keeping up on the activities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the American Chiropractic Association's and the South Dakota Chiropractors' Association's Auxiliary. She often traveled with her family to state chiropractic association conventions. Her husband died in 1980. Vaudis survived a brain hemorrhage in 1990. After completing rehabilitation following her stroke, she was the very first resident tenant in the Primrose senior apartments in Aberdeen. Later, she moved into Bethesda Towne Square assisted living apartments. In 2007, she became a resident of Bethesda nursing home where she lived until she died.

She is survived by her very special longtime friend; Ben Schroeder, along with three sons: Richard (Cindy Canode) of Pierre, Dr. Thomas (Kris) of Aberdeen, Robert, also of Aberdeen; one son-in-law, Juan Banda of Canby, Ore; six grandchildren, including: Scott (Brandi) Ivey, Michelle (Jon) Opp, Richard (Meg) Ivey, Tom (Amber) Ivey Jr., Brian Ivey and Brandon Ivey; and five great-grandchildren: Callie and Julia Ivey of Sioux Falls, Jace and Lincoln Ivey of Sioux Falls and Evelyn Ivey of Manchester, N.H. She also is survived by a sister-in-law, Doris Dashel; and a brother-in-law, Bob LaRocque.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; and one sister; her husband; and her daughter, Susan Banda.

Vaudis so loved all animals and frequently contributed to the Aberdeen Area Humane Society.

The family requests that any memorials be made to the Aberdeen Area Humane Society in her name. She would have loved that!
