Robert M. Omland, son of Edward and Amanda (Lux) Omland, was born on Oct. 28, 1921, in Aberdeen. He was raised and attended school there, graduating from Aberdeen Central High School with the class of 1939. Bob then worked in Aberdeen prior to his enlistment in the U.S. Army.

Bob was united in marriage to Alma Schilling on June 24, 1943, in Elgin, Texas, where Bob was stationed in the Army, prior to his shipping overseas to the South Pacific. Bob later received his honorable discharge when he returned home from his service there. Bob and Alma made their home in Aberdeen, where Bob went to work for Alma's parents in the family grocery business.

Bob and Alma remained in Aberdeen, eventually purchased the Corner Grocery, and raised their two sons. Bob and Alma worked side by side until selling the business in 1978. Bob then went to work for Kessler's in Aberdeen for several years prior to his retirement. Bob's beloved wife died on Dec. 15, 2012.

Bob was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. He was a long-time lay leader in the congregation and facilitated the construction of Zion's most recent addition. In his free time, Bob enjoyed hunting and spending time at the family lake cabin. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and cherished the time he was able to spend with his family.

Grateful for having shared Bob's life are two sons: Richard (Julie) Omland, St. Paul, Minn., and Gary (Kim) Omland, Madison, Minn.;  grandchildren: Rebecca (Kris) Lachenmaier, Des Moines, Iowa, Amanda (Jordy) Anderson, Champlin, Minn., Laurie (Robert) Strom, Aberdeen, Patricia (Brandon) Smid, Aberdeen, and Scott (Amber) Omland of Madison, Minn.; and seven great-grandsons.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alma; one sister, Virginia Derian; and two brothers: Gordon Omland and Everett Omland.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Bethesda Home of Aberdeen or Zion Lutheran Church of Aberdeen.
