Roscoe: The funeral service for Robert D. "Bob" Baer, 75, of Roscoe will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2013, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Roscoe.

Interment with military honors will follow at Morningside Cemetery in Roscoe.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Gramm Funeral Home, 720 N. Sixth St., in Ipswich.

Bob was born Jan. 19, 1938, on the family farm west of Loyalton, S.D., and south of Roscoe, to Jacob C. and Hulda (Miller) Baer. He attended a one-room country school just a half mile from the farm. The schoolhouse even had a barn for ponies. He graduated from Roscoe High School in 1956 and then attended Northern State College in Aberdeen for two years.

He was joined in marriage to Joanne Krein of Leola, S.D. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted in to the U.S. Army, and they spent the next few years in Fort Sill, Okla. He reached the rank of specialist 4 before being honorably discharged as a clerk in an artillery unit in 1962.

They returned home with their son, Scott Lee, and lived with his parents before moving into their own home. Bob's wife, Joanne, died just a few short years later in 1968. Bob and his son continued working in the family farming operation.

Bob moved to Ipswich a few years ago and, recently, his failing health led him to Golden Living Center in Ipswich.

He loved his family and cherished time spent with his grandchildren. He enjoyed farm life and working with cattle, as well as visiting with many friends. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Roscoe and of the American Legion.

Bob passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

He is survived by his son, Scott Baer of Roscoe; two brothers: Orville Baer of Roscoe and James (Pam) Baer of Onaka, S.D.; four grandchildren: Angela (Eric) Miles of Watertown, Courtney Baer of Ipswich, Olivia Baer of Roscoe and Jacob Baer of Ipswich; and one great-grandchild, Brekken Miles of Watertown.

His parents and wife preceded him in death.
