Aberdeen: Nicodemus Nick F. Heier, 91, of Aberdeen passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 409 Second Ave. N.E., Aberdeen.
Burial, with military rites, will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen.
Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W., Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, at the mortuary with a liturgical wake service and rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation continues for one hour prior to Mass at church on Saturday.
Nicodemus Nick F. Heier was born on Oct. 31, 1921, to Martin and Eva (Heinz) Heier in Hosmer. He was raised and attended country school in this area.
In August 1942, Nick was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Medic Corps. Following his honorable discharge in November 1945, he returned to Hosmer.
Nick was united in marriage to Helen C. Lacher on Jan. 7, 1946, in Leola. Their union was blessed with eight children, six sons and two daughters. The family made their home and farmed in the Hosmer area for many years. In 1964, the family moved to Aberdeen, where Nick was employed at the YMCA for three years. He then began working for Northwest Engine Supply and continued his employment with them until the time of his retirement in 1986. Nick and Helen shared over 58 years of marriage before she passed away on Sept. 3, 2004. Nick continued to make Aberdeen his home until the time of his death.
Nick was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aberdeen, the Hosmer American Legion and the Aberdeen VFW.
Nick enjoyed being a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He truly enjoyed the time he spent with his family.
Blessed to have shared Nick's life are his children: Richard (Glenda) Heier of Mina, Stan (Jan) Heier of Aberdeen, Jerry (Cam) Heier of Aberdeen, Sharon (Mike) Garrett of Aberdeen, Bill (Sharee) Heier of Sioux Falls, Bob (Mary) Heier of Aberdeen, Gary (Lori) Heier of Mina, and Johanna Heier of Aberdeen; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Nick's parents; wife, one grandson, five brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
