A small portion of a slough behind the Aberdeen post office was burnt in a Monday evening fire.
Todd Salfrank, battalion chief of Aberdeen Fire and Rescue, said a tree also caught on fire and some smoldering branches had to be removed from it. Nobody was hurt as a result of the fire.
The fire was reported at 5:10 p.m. near the bike path and behind the post office on South Fifth Street, Salfrank said. He said the area is surrounded by brush and cattails. A 50-foot-by-50-foot area burned, Salfrank said. Firefighters were on the scene until about 6:25 p.m.
Cigarette packages and other garbage were found in the area, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Salfrank said.
