Irene Hansen, 96, died at Golden Living Healthcare Center in Madison on Aug. 11, 2013.
Irene Lillian Myhre was born on Sept. 30, 1916, at Baker, Mont., to Odin and Olene (Braseth) Myhre. She married Maxwell Hansen at Baker on Oct. 31, 1936. He preceded her in death in 1964.
She is survived by one son, Thomas (Marge) of Huron; daughter, Maxine (James) Swanson of Madison; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Duane Myhre; and sister, Laurel Heaton both of Shelton, Wash.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Cresbard. Burial will be in the Cresbard Cemetery.
She grew up in Baker, Mont., before moving to Cresbard in 1936. She moved to Huron in 2009 and to Madison in 2011. She was active in the Concordia Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school. She was also a 4-H leader. In 1997, she and her daughter won the Dakota History Conference Award for distinguished contribution to the preservation of the cultural heritage of South Dakota and the Northern Plains.
The family requests memorials be directed to the Concordia Lutheran Church in Cresbard, Our Savior Lutheran Church in Madison and the Cresbard Cemetery Association.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the church.
