Aberdeen: Funeral service for Ervin H. Wahl, 93, Aberdeen, will be 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at Zion Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Marcia Sylvester will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be performed by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post No. 24.
Ervin died on Monday, Aug. 26, at the Golden Living Center in Ipswich.
Visitation will be on Thursday, Aug. 29, from 1 to 7 p.m. with family present from 5 to 6 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Ervin H. Wahl, son of Fred and Carolina (Kessler) Wahl, was born on Oct. 15, 1919, near Mound City. He attended country school prior to graduating from Java High School in 1938. Ervin went on to attend Northern State Teachers College where he earned his teachers certificate. He then returned to Java and taught for two years.
On April 8, 1942, Ervin enlisted in the United States Army and served with the 3rd Infantry during World War II. During his enlistment, Ervin's battles and campaigns included Algeria, French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France and Rhineland. He received his honorable discharge in June 1946. Ervin enrolled in the Kansas City School of Watchmaking in the summer of 1946, graduating in 1949.
He was united in marriage to Erma Landis on July 25, 1949, in Kansas City, Mo.
Ervin and Erma began making their home in Bristol where they owned and operated a jewelry store and raised their two sons. They purchased a lake cabin on Enemy Swim Lake where they enjoyed countless weekends until selling the cabin in 1979. They remained in Bristol until October 1981 when they retired and moved to Aberdeen.
Grateful for having shared Ervin's life are his wife, Erma, of Aberdeen; two sons: Wayne Wahl, Grand Rapids, Mich., and Donald (Gail) Wahl, Sioux Falls; two grandsons: Ryan (Meagen) Wahl and Matthew Wahl; one great-grandson, Tristan Wahl; and one brother, Merle Wahl.
Ervin was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Carolina Wahl; and one brother, Edmund.
