William Moses Brumbaugh, age 90, of Pierre died at St. Mary's Hospital on Aug. 28, 2013.
Visitation will be at Isburg Funeral Chapel from 6 to 7 p.m. with a Prayer Service following at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, in Pierre with Pastor Brad Urbach officiating. Interment will be at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City at 11 a.m. MST on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, with Chaplin Charlie Walker officiating.
William Brumbaugh was born March 27, 1923, on the family farm in Brule County, South Dakota to Nettie and Jay Brumbaugh. He has four brothers, Allen, Norman, Johnny, Gaylord.
He graduated from Stanley County High School system in 1941. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Air Force, and was assigned to the 457th Bomber Group. He attended Basic Training at Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Camp Lee Virginia. He was stationed at Glatton Air Force Base in England and received an Honorable Discharge from the military service in 1945. Upon Mr. Brum's release from the US military in 1945, he went to work for General Motors Equipment Company as an auto parts and sales clerk. On Oct. 1, 1948, he began working as a Senior Station Agent for Western Airlines. He held this position for 37 years and retired on Dec. 31, 1985. He loved his job and took pride in going above and beyond what was required to accommodate the needs of his travelers.
He is a life member of the American Legion and VFW. He was also involved in the Pierre Fire Department for many years, loved to play golf, travel and was able to participate the South Dakota Honor Flight Program, to Washington D.C.
William married Marian Bagby on Aug. 10, 1943. This marriage took place while he was in the service at Camp Lee Virginia awaiting his assignment to ship overseas during World War II. From this union three children were born, William Norman, Susanne Marie Ruhnke (David) and Michael Ray (Kathryn).
William married Glenyce (McCumber) Stout on Aug. 17, 1971. Joining Glenyce in to this marriage were her children, Janyce Denton and Sherri Kelley.
William is survived by two of his children: Susanne Ruhnke and husband David of Pierre, Michael and wife Kathryn of Aberdeen; step-children: Janyce Denton from Huston, Texas, and Sherri Kelley of Pierre; five grandchildren: Shauna Hoffman of Sioux Falls, Chad Winters, Sante Fe, New Mexico, Sarah Sonnenschein; and step-grandchildren: Walter Ruhnke and Jeanne Kelley of Pierre; and ten great-grandchildren
He was preceded in death by both of his parents, Jay and Nettie; his step father, Otho Potter; his wives, Marian and Glenyce; oldest son, William Jr.; as well as his brothers: Norman, Allen, John and Jay.
