Mound City: Adele Rubida was born Oct. 18, 1926, to Freda and Edward Opheim of Mound City and passed away peacefully in her sleep Tuesday morning, Nov. 6, 2012.

Adele graduated as valedictorian of the 1944 class of Glenham High School. After high school, she attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, where she received her bachelor's of science in education. During that time she met Ralph, her husband to be, at the grocery store he worked at. They began courting while she finished college and started her teaching career in Hot Springs, S.D. They married on June 28, 1949, and made their home in Vermillion, where Adele continued her teaching career in the Vermillion area. In 1960, they came to Java, S.D., where they began farming Adele's grandparents (George and Christina Bender's) homesteaded land, while Adele taught at Java High School for about 20 years. During this time they had 4 children: Susan, Alan, Roxane and Mark. In 1995, the couple retired in Mound City.

Memories of Adele are many, including how the family would enjoy fishing, hunting and hunting Indian artifacts along the Missouri River when it was legal. She loved to cook for holidays and family gatherings, and was always willing to help anyone. Her hobbies included genealogy research, needle work, reading and gardening. Adele and Ralph traveled extensively before having children. They traveled the United States and Alaska. While traveling, they would manage to find a scenic location to park and camp, while putting their belongings under the car, while they made the seats into their beds. Her outlook on life was always positive.

Adele was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and The Mound City Garden Club.

Adele is survived by her children: Susan (Larry) Kellar of Mound City, Alan (Diana) of Yuma, Ariz., Roxane (Perry) Schnaible of Sioux Falls, and Mark Jay Rubida of Java. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Carol Wickham of Florida.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
