Mass of Christian burial for George Roth, 88, is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Roscoe.

Burial will be at the Morningside Cemetery.

A wake and rosary was held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at Gramm Funeral Home, 720 N. Sixth St., in Ipswich, with visitation at 6 p.m.

Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Thursday.

George was born on April 3, 1925, on a farm southwest of Roscoe to Valentine and Katherine (Goetz) Roth. He attended country school and then helped on his parent's farm.

He married Lucy Weron on Oct. 15, 1945, in Bowdle. They made their home at his parents' farm for a short time before moving to another farm north of Roscoe. In the early 1960s, they purchased the farm. George carefully tended to his crops and livestock for the next 37 years. Lucy passed away in 1983, but George continued on in his kind and gentle manner. After selling the farm in 1997, he continued to make his home there until failing health forced a move into Roscoe in 2005.

George lived in assisted living in Roscoe before moving to Primrose in Aberdeen in 2010. In the fall of 2012, he moved to the United Living Community in Brookings.

He was a lifetime member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Roscoe, where he served on the church board. He also served as a member of the township board and had been the township superintendent.

George loved people of all ages. He spent more than 35 years driving school bus for Roscoe Public School. He enjoyed visiting with friends and especially his family. His grandchildren brought great joy to his life.

George died Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at United Living Community in Brookings.

Thankful for having shared in George's life are his daughters: JoAnn (Tim) Malsam of Brookings and Linda (Lowell "Butch") Wattier of Spearfish; sons: James (Sue) Roth of Ankeny, Iowa, Robert (Wendy) Roth of LeMar, Mo., LeRoy (Marilyn) Roth of DeSmet and Mark (Laurel) Roth of Pierre; brother, John (Lillian) Roth of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; sister, Julia Weron of Yakima, Wash.; seventeen grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

His parents; wife; two grandchildren; one brother, Kasper; and one sister, Magdalena, preceded him in death.
