Aberdeen: Services for Cora Kurtz, 93, of Aberdeen and formerly of Groton will be 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. The Rev. Tyler Poppen will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton.
Visitation will be held at the chapel on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Cora passed away at her residence on Nov. 11, 2013.
Cora Lillian was born in Putney to Frank and Bertha (Lorenz) Jensen on Dec. 17, 1919. She was raised on the family farm, the 10th of 14 children.
On Sept. 19, 1936, she was united in marriage with Darrel Kurtz in Aberdeen and they were blessed with eight children: Myrtle, Shirley, Lois, Karen, Duane, Connie, Darwin and Dennis. Cora worked beside her husband on the family dairy. They moved to Aberdeen in 2002, due to Darrel's health. He passed away in October of that year.
Cora was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. She enjoyed working on crossword puzzles, crafts and collecting angels. She also liked to garden, both floral and vegetable. Cora took excellent care of her family and friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand. She enjoyed visiting with others, telling jokes and will be remembered for her heart of gold.
Cora endured many sorrows during her lifetime, but her strong faith carried her through.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Shirley Simon of Kaycee, Wyo., Lois (Victor) Schwan of Big Bear Lake, Calif., Karen Kurtz of Aberdeen, Duane Kurtz of Groton, Connie Olson of Rapid City, Darwin (Joyce) Kurtz of Whitewood, Dennis (Sue) Kurtz of Claremore, Okla.; her son-in-law, John Blocker; and two sisters-in-law: Abbie Jensen and Violet Jensen; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; cousins; friends and neighbors.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband of 66 years; her daughter, Myrtle Blocker; son-in-law, Tom Simon; and all of her siblings: Laura, Dora, Loretta, Ruth, George, Melvin, Fred, Gustive, Oscar, Ben, LeRoy, Thurlo and Norman.
Memorials can be directed to the Lazy Farmer's 4-H Club or the James Cemetery, where her family members rest.
