Edythe passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Wheatcrest Hills in Britton at age 86.
Edythe Leanora
DeYoung was born Sept. 22, 1926, in Doland to Sebe and Nora (Larson) DeYoung. She moved with her family to Hecla, Houghton and Ashton before settling in Britton when she was a junior in high school. She graduated from Britton High School in 1945.
On Nov. 16, 1945, she married Neil Stiegelmeier. They made their home and farmed with Neil's dad on the family's homestead until purchasing their own farm northeast of Britton in 1958. There, they raised their four sons and seven daughters.
Edythe's greatest joy was her family. Her loving hands were always busy baking, cooking, mending and gardening for her family. She raised and sold chickens for a number of years. She carried full, hot meals to the fields during harvest. Her therapeutic time was spent writing newsy letters to her brother and sisters and planting and tending her many flower gardens, which she never considered work. She accomplished her life's goal of seeing all 11 of her children graduate from high school.
Neil passed away March 20, 1985. Edythe then moved to a home in Britton. After selling her home, she moved to Pierre to be near her daughter, Cindy. Nine months later, she moved back to Britton because she missed the little grandchildren. Edythe made her home in an apartment until moving to Spruce Court, and later to Wheatcrest Hills in 2008.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Deanna (Val) Hilzendeger, Spokane, Wash.; Rita (Joe) Warren, Clifton, N.J.; Adyle (Cal) Cooper, Maple Grove, Minn.; Connie (Bob) Emerson, Houston, Texas; Ricky (Bernie) Stiegelmeier, League City, Texas; Roger (Laurie) Stiegelmeier, Claremont; Kim (Cathy) Stiegelmeier, Britton; Cindy Stiegelmeier, Pierre; Jan Stiegelmeier, Aberdeen; Dawn (David) Smith and Vicky Fisher, both of Britton; 31 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Joane (Wally) Peterson, Bullhead City, Ariz.; a brother, Donald DeYoung, Poway, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
Preceding her in death were her parents; Thomas Vanstone; her husband; an infant son; a sister, Maxine Shelton; two sisters-in-law: Betty DeYoung and Pauline DeYoung; a son-in-law, Roger "Boots" Fisher; two daughters-in-law: Jane Stiegelmeier and Cheryl Stiegelmeier; and a grandson, Brian Felchle.
