Garold "Blackie" Engelhard, 84, passed away at home on Dec. 29, 2012.
He was born Jan. 15, 1928, in Bowdle. He graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1946, enlisting in the military and serving three years at Hickam Air Force Base in Honolulu, Hawaii. Upon returning to Aberdeen, he attended Northern State Teachers College on the GI bill. Upon graduating from Northern, he taught three years at Herreid High School. He married Jeanette Zick on Oct. 20, 1955. While working at Leim Sporting Goods Store, he obtained his masters degree from NSTC. They moved to Milbank in 1957, where he taught and coached for eight years. In 1965, they moved back to Aberdeen, where he taught and coached at the new Roncalli High School for four years. In 1969, with their six children, the family moved to Tucson, Ariz. He taught, coached and counseled until retirement in 1993.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aloysius and Wilhelmina Engelhard; and brother, Dr. Warren E. Engelhard.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jeanette (Zick) Engelhard; six children: Rich (Leslie) Engelhard, Margaret Engelhard, Alan Engelhard, Kari (Joseph) Bush, all of Tucson; Kelly (Mike) Canfield of Sierra Vista and Jody (Tom) McDaniel of Flagstaff; 11 grandchildren; two nieces; and three nephews. Visitation was held in Tucson at Evergreen Mortuary from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013. Memorial Mass was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 8650 N. Shannon Road, Tuscon.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Flowing Wells High School Alumni Association, 1556 W. Prince Road, Tucson, AZ 85705, in memory of Coach "Blackie" Engelhard. Arrangements were made by Evergreen Mortuary and Cemetery, Tuscon.
