Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m., with a prayer service at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Mavis Arlene Papke, daughter of Paul and Alma (Steger) Papke, was born Nov. 2, 1925, in Aberdeen. She attended grade school in New Hope Township and graduated from Warner High School in 1942. She went on to attend Aberdeen Business College while working for Socony Vacuum.
Mavis was united in marriage to Joseph Schroh on Feb. 15, 1947, in Aberdeen. She was employed at Northern State University for many years, where she worked in the Office of Finance and Administration until her retirement in 1985. Her beloved husband died on Dec. 20, 1983.
Mavis loved her pet cats and enjoyed hunting and fishing. She enjoyed traveling, scrapbooking and doing volunteer work. She had a real passion for photography and collecting dolls. Mavis especially cherished the times she was able to spend with her family and friends. She was a wonderful lady who loved to have fun and had a contagious smile.
Mavis was a life member of the Retired South Dakota State Employees Association and a permanent member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, the Aberdeen Senior Center and R.S.V.P. Group. Mavis was an associate member of the Telephone Pioneers of American, Casper E. Yost chapter, member of Avera St. Luke's Midland Auxiliary, board member of the Aberdeen Living Center Advisory Council and volunteer secretary to the NSU Lutheran Ministry Advisory.
Grateful for having shared Mavis's life are her sister, Vera Erickson; many nieces, nephews and very good friends.
Mavis was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother-in-law, Harley Erickson; nieces, Becky Jo McSherry and Janice Peterson; and one great-nephew.
