Alan Ross Purintun was born Nov. 19, 1928, at home in De Smet. He was welcomed by his parents, Joseph O. and Florette (Wheat) Purintun, along with his siblings: Theodore, Mildred, Helen, Orin and Robert.
Alan passed away on Jan. 23, 2013.
He graduated from De Smet High School in 1946, after which he entered the University of Nebraska, obtaining a degree in 1950. He attended law school at the University of South Dakota, obtaining his degree in 1952.
In association with Harry J. Eggen and E. F. Wilkinson, he practiced law in De Smet until being appointed Kingsbury County judge in 1955. He served Miner County for a number of years in the same capacity. Alan succeeded his father as an abstractor in Kingsbury County, until he retired in 1994.
Alan was united in marriage to Mary Jane Eggen on Aug. 6, 1950, in the First Congregational Church of De Smet. To this union, six children were born.
He was active with civic activities until his health limited his participation. Alan was on many church boards, sang in the choir, served as Sunday school superintendent and was the longest living member of the UCC Church residing in De Smet. He was an original member of the De Smet Kiwanis, 60 year member of the Masonic Lodge and past Master and served as clerk at the De Smet School Board for many years. Alan became a member of the State Bar Association of South Dakota on Sept. 8, 1952, and had received recognition for being a 50 year member in 2002.
Those grateful for having Alan in their life are his wife, Mary Jane (Dollie) of De Smet; children: Dr. Scott (Trisha) Purintun of Britton; Ross Purintun of Bellevue, Wash.; Mark (Susan) Purintun of De Smet; Mary Jo (Robert) Robish of Redwood Falls, Minn.; Jay Purintun of Sugar Creek, Mo.; and Julie (Lee) Howell of Sioux Falls; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and twin great-grandchildren due to arrive very soon; and other relatives.
