Funeral service for Edith R. Atkinson, 96, of Aberdeen will be 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. The Rev. Deb Grismer will officiate.
Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be Monday for one hour prior to the service at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Edith died Jan. 24, 2013, at her home.
Edith Rose Hart, daughter of Abnor and Molly (Haberman) Hart, was born March 29, 1916, in Alpha, S.D. She attended country school. Edith was a seamstress early in life. She worked as a seamstress in the Dickey, N.D., and McPherson and Brown County, S.D., area.
She was united in marriage to Charles Milton Atkinson on June 30, 1934. They made their home in several towns in southcentral North Dakota and northcentral South Dakota, due to the nature of her husband's work. They then settled on the family farm near Forbes, N.D., and in 1954, they moved to Aberdeen. She was the tailor and seamstress for Granger Cleaners and later at Pantorium Cleaners. While she was in her 70s, she became a home care aide for many years. After her retirement, she worked part-time as the miniature golf attendant at the Dairy Queen Mini Golf Course.
Edith was an avid crafter and collector of Barbie Dolls, owning approximately 1,500. She also loved going to rummage sales.
Edith is survived by three children: Joseph (Darlene) Atkinson of Aberdeen, Minnie Daniels of Greenfield, Wis., and Charles (Donna) Atkinson of Florida; son-in-law, Russell (Ann) Swanson of Florida; brother, Charles Hart of Aberdeen; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents; husband (Nov. 3, 1969); daughter, Joy Swanson; son-in-law, Norman Daniels; two grandsons, Scott A. Weinhold and Kevin G. Swanson; and 11 brothers and sisters.
