The funeral service for LaVerna Hoffman, 87, Aberdeen, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Tom Haggar will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park. LaVerna died Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
LaVerna Violet Hoffman, daughter of John and Emma (Schauer) Hoffman, was born Sept. 11, 1925, on the family farm near Leola, S.D. This is the area where she was raised and attended school.
LaVerna was united in marriage to Oliver Hoffman on Oct. 26, 1947. They made their home on the Hoffman family homestead and farmed with his parents for 5 years. At this time, they began making their home near Ipswich, S.D., where they farmed for the next 46 years. LaVerna's beloved husband died Dec. 25, 1992. She remained on the farm until 1995, when she built a new home in Aberdeen. In 2008, she became a resident at
ManorCare Health Services in Aberdeen, where she remained until the time of her death.
LaVerna was a member of First United Methodist Church. She loved to be outside, and especially enjoyed working in her garden. She enjoyed canning and was an exceptional cook. In her free time, she enjoyed visiting with her friends and playing cards. She was always willing to help out her friends and give them a ride around town wherever they needed to go.
Grateful for having shared LaVerna's life are her two sons: Floyd (Bonnie) Hoffman, Ipswich, and Jerrold Hoffman, Tulsa, Okla.; one daughter, Judy (Al) Castanola, Sunnyvale, Calif.; one brother, Albert (Lavina) Hoffman; and one sister, Idlette Rath.
LaVerna was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother, Richard Hoffman.
