Memorial service for LaVerne C. Opp, 85, of Eureka will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Carlsen Funeral Home in Eureka. The Rev. Richard Stetler will officiate.

 Inurnment of LaVerne and her husband, Ervin (5-18-2013), will be in Eureka City Cemetery. A portion of their cremated remains will be scattered on the Opp family homestead.

 LaVerne died Sunday, July 7, 2013, at Avera Eureka Health Care Center.      

 LaVerne C. Aman, daughter of Emil and Martha (Job) Aman was born April 12, 1928, on the family homestead north of Hosmer in McPherson County. She attended country school near her family home and helped on the family homestead.

 She was united in marriage to Ervin Opp on June 1, 1947, at Hosmer. They made their home on the Opp homestead farm northeast of Eureka until 1994, when they moved into Eureka. LaVerne continued to take an active role in the Opp farming operation until she entered the Eureka Health Care Center in January 2013.

 LaVerne loved farming, working with cattle and having the ability to operate every piece of farm equipment. Gardening and canning were always a pastime for her. She enjoyed her children's activities as well as her grandchildren's and she always had her stash drawer stocked with treats for her grandchildren. Her family will always remember her delicious meals with wonderful homemade chocolate sauce with dessert. She was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. LaVerne and Ervin were team bowlers in Eureka for more than 50 years. During that 50-year span, she bowled for Eureka Super Valu and Eureka Red Owl teams. She also liked to play cards with his friends and relatives.

 LaVerne was a member of Eureka Reformed Church and Pheasants Forever.

 LaVerne is survived by two sons: Dr. Darold (Pam) Opp of Aberdeen and Mark (Elisa) Opp of Eureka; two sisters: Irene Burrer of Marshfield, Wis., and Florence (Lawrence) Opp of Sioux Falls; one brother, Milbert Aman of Salem; brother-in-law, Duane Neuharth of Sioux Falls; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

 Her parents; husband; two sons: Arnold and Kenneth; one grandson; one brother, Raymond Aman; and one sister, Delores Neuharth, preceded her in death.

 The soloist will be Cindy Schumacher.

 The family prefers memorials to Avera Eureka Health Care Center.

Matthew Halsey

Early Monday morning, Matthew Halsey, 21, passed away due to a tragic accident.

 He is survived by his mother, Tina, and his father, Roland; three brothers: Steven, Andrew and Joshua.

 His interests included song writing, bowling and hacky sack.

 Matt was loved by everyone and his spirit will live on in our memories.

 We love and miss you.

Ipswich: Harry Stahl, preacher of the Deerfield Colony for more than 30 years, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

 Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Deerfield Colony, with burial to follow in their cemetery.

 He is survived by his wife; his mother; three sons; and one daughter.

 He was preceded in death by his father; first wife; and a granddaughter.

Chisago City, Minn.: Martha M. Jung, 98, of Chisago City passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013.

 Martha grew up in the Hosmer area. Her father worked for the railroad for eight years, and then bought a farm when Martha was 12 years old, which he farmed for 15 years, and then owned and operated a gas station in Hosmer until he retired.

 Martha and her husband Samuel were married in 1934 and rented a farm southeast of Hosmer for nine years. They then bought a farm in 1943, 5 miles southwest of Leola, which they farmed for 33 years. They sold their farm in 1976 and bought a house in Leola. Samuel died Jan. 18, 1980. Martha continued to live there until her health failed and then moved to an apartment in Chisago City, where her daughter, Marleen, lived. She lived at the Parmly LifePointes Nursing Home from 2009 until her death.

 Martha was an active member at St. James Lutheran Church as president and treasurer of her Ladies Aid Group. She loved to read, make quilts, crochet, embroider and always had a large vegetable garden and many flowers to compliment her home.

 Martha was preceded in death by her parents, John and Kathrina Grischkowsky; husband, Samuel; granddaughter, Angela; sisters: Alita, Adelgunda, Rosalie, Frieda and Dorothy; brothers: George and Henry; and daughter-in-law, June Jung.

 Martha is survived by daughter, Marleen Layton; son, James Jung; grandsons: Delane, Timothy and Paul; granddaughters: Lindsey and Maria; sisters: Edna Durall and Laura Franson; brothers: Oscar Grischkowsky, Harold Grischkowsky and John Grischkowsky.

 The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2013, at St. James Lutheran Church in Leola.

 Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church.

 Interment will be at Green Mound Cemetery in Leola.

 Lois went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Society in Clear Lake.

 Lois Trapp was born June 4, 1923, to Andrew and Elsie (Teske) Christensen. She grew up on a farm near Turton. She graduated from Brentford High School in 1941 and went on to obtain her teaching certificate at Northern Normal College. She taught at country schools in the Turton area. In 1943, Lois married Charles Trapp. They purchased a farm northwest of Conde, where they lived until 1966, when they moved south of Conde.

 Lois was active in many community organizations over the years. She especially enjoyed being a 4-H leader, singing in the church choir and participating in the UMW programs and plays. Playing bridge was one of her favorite activities. She was active in the Conde Senior Citizens, Conde UMW, and Conde Legion Auxiliary. She was actively involved in the restoration and maintenance of the Historic Turton Congregational Church.

 She leaves behind two daughters: Linda (Brad) Gauger of Clear Lake and Patty (Gary) Hearnen of Conde; 12 grandchildren: Jim Trapp and Bill Trapp, both of Sioux Falls, Holli (Mark) Mayer of Austin, Minn., Amy (Todd) Forkel of Aberdeen, Angie (Jason) Weishaar of Fargo, N.D., Alysha (Ryan) Huber of Hartford, Melanie (Doug) Waldner of Hayfield, Minn., Jon (Missy) Heintzman of Joice, Iowa, Lon Hearnen and Chad Hearnen of Conde, Carla (Ryan) Miller of Rapid City and Jamie Trapp and fiancée Blake Siebel of Beulah, N.D.; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

 Lois was preceded in death by Charles; two sons: Bill and Chuck; and her siblings: Harold, Dick, Dorothy Kettering, Frank and Jack.

 Shirley Jean Gruis, daughter of Melvin and Hilda (Bock) Gruis, was born Feb. 2, 1930, in Sioux Falls, S.D. She was raised and attended school in Centerville, S.D. Following her high school graduation, she worked for a short time as a telephone operator in Sioux Falls.

 Shirley was united in marriage to Kleng Olson in Centerville on April 27, 1950. At this time, Shirley and Kleng operated a 24-hour service station near Vermillion, S.D., with his parents. Following Kleng's discharge from the Navy, they moved to Aberdeen. Shirley stayed at home for several years and raised her family. She then went to work for Coke and, later, St. Luke's Hospital, where she worked for many years until her health forced her to retire.

 Shirley's beloved husband died July 21, 2000. She continued to make her home in Aberdeen. Shirley was a member of Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ in Aberdeen and was active with the Women's Fellowship.

 Grateful for having shared Shirley's life are her children: Bruce (Linda) Olson of Las Vegas, Nev., Bradley (Roxie) Olson of Aberdeen, Douglas Olson of Sioux Falls and Paul (Carsi) Olson of Perry, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

 Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sisters: Jeanette and JoAnn.

 In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be directed to the Avera St. Luke's Foundation, 305 S. State St., Aberdeen SD 57401.
