Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013 at the church, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Price Funeral Chapel of Britton.

Valrae is at peace after a 4½ year battle with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a blood disorder. She passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls at age 61.

Valrae Faye Thomas was born Feb. 15, 1952, to Anton Francis "Tony" and Phyllis (Woulph) Thomas in Rutland, N.D., at Meyers Maternity Home. Val attended Rutland Elementary School and graduated from Sargent Central High School in Forman, N.D., where she was involved in many activities. In 1970, she went to NDSU and became a teacher, but found it wasn't her calling.

She married Ray Miller in 1975. After sometime, they moved to Bismarck, N.D., where sons Ian and Seth were born. While in Bismarck, Val worked at MedCenter One. It was there she found her true passion - caring for people.

Val and the boys moved to Slidell, La., where she attended school in New Orleans to study radiation therapy. After completing her training, she took a job at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen. She worked in the Cancer Care Center for 24 years until her health forced her to retire a few months ago.

Val had a zest for life. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, quilting, boating, camping, motorcycling and scraping paint. She and her family took many trips on their Harley Davidson motorcycles, which she loved. Traveling was her thing! She had seen most of the U.S. and several other countries.

Val made many friends through her motorcycle club and Questers. She was known and loved by many of her patients for her caring and compassionate way.

Those who shared Valrae's life are her two sons: Ian (Jen Cornelius) Miller and their daughter, Peyton, of Forman, N.D.; Seth (Stacie Rau) Miller of St. Louis Park, Minn.; their father, Raymond Miller; her grandchildren: Dalton and Michael Harris, Jordan Cornelius, Mason, Austin and Quinton Mischke, and Adra and Rylan Sundburg; sister, Karen (Harris) Anderson of Havana, N.D.; a number of nieces, nephews and their families, and many friends and other relatives.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and sister and brother-in-law: Pam and Harlo Thol.
