Maurice Scott, 87, of rural Hecla died Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Maurice Leroy Scott, son of Alba and Mary Scott, was born on Nov. 28, 1925, on the family farm in rural Hecla, S.D. He attended Walker Country School, and then graduated from Hecla High School in 1943. After high school, Maurice took over his grandparent's farm. On Dec. 10, 1947, he married Darlene Wright. They continued to make their home near Hecla for 65 years, and the two were blessed with five children. In February 2013, due to failing health, Maurice and Darlene moved into Bethesda Home in Aberdeen, S.D.
Maurice enjoyed fishing, and always loved having his grandchildren and great-grandchildren out at the farm. He was a longtime member of the Lansing Township Board, where he served for 54 years; Hecla United Methodist Church Board; Hecla School Board; the Odd Fellow's Lodge; and the Greater Hecla Association. He was also a member and leader of 4-H for many years, and just last week, his great-granddaughter, Bailey, showed a calf of his.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene; two sons, Leroy (Norma) Scott, Highmore, S.D., and Bob Scott, Great Falls, Mont.; three daughters, Nancy (Ron) Frohling, Becky (Darrell) Berreth, and Kathy (Rod) Heinrich, all of Hecla, S.D.; 18 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Floyd and Stanley; and two infant grandsons.
A prayer service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, starting at 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Hecla, S.D. His memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, starting at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Hecla City Cemetery.
