Redfield: Albert G. Miesen, 85, of Redfield died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, at his home. Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Redfield. Father Christopher Hughes will celebrate the Mass. After lunch and a time for fellowship, the burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Zell. Visitation will be Friday from 1 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m. and the family present starting at 6 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield.
Albert George Miesen, son of Peter and Mathilda (Brueggemann) Miesen, was born on Aug. 28, 1928, in Zell. He attended St. Mary's Catholic Grade School in Zell and graduated from Redfield High School in 1946.
He married Delores Meyer, the love of his life, in 1950. After spending a short time in Rapid City, they returned to Zell where they made their home until June 2005. Albert substituted and worked as a clerk in the Zell Post Office until his father retired in 1964. At that time he became the postmaster and served for 28 years until his retirement in 1992. Albert and Delores were also proprietors of Miesen's Store until 1988. During these years, Albert also found time to take care of the Zell water, make deliveries to the Benedictine Sisters and even help with food deliveries to snowbound residents.
Albert was a member of NAPUS, the association of postmasters. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 53 years. He was also on the Faulk County Hospital Board for many years.
Albert enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. In his early years, he enjoyed bowling and playing softball with the guys from Zell. He loved gardening and taking care of his huge lawn. In later years, he enjoyed spending time in the back room of the store with all his local buddies.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Delores; daughters: Sandy (Dan) Coover of Redfield, Betty (Don) Haufschild of Jamestown, N.D., Patty (Dan) Schilling of Wessington, Terrie Miesen of Sioux Falls, Jackie (Jeff) Fiegen of Sioux Falls and Mary (Dave) Schneider of Plymouth, Minn. He is also survived by his brother, Bob (Becky) Miesen of Houston, Texas; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and special friends, Dennis and Jacki Stemper.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Delores' parents; sisters: Mildred (Paul) Lammers, Mary (John) Schiller, Phyllis (Ray) Huss, Pat Jablonski, Alice (Paul) Shue, Judy (Greg) Kadlec; and brothers: Peter and Edward Miesen.
