Carolyn Brockel

 The funeral service for Carolyn Brockel, 97, of Aberdeen, will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Raymond L. Pomplun officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Carolyn was called home on Friday, Nov. 2, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen.

 Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m., with family present from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

 Carolyn Klingman was born on May 5, 1915, to Jacob and Barbara (Quenzer) Klingman in Mound City, S.D.  She attended country school near Mound City. She married Gottlieb Brockel on Jan. 19, 1932, at Selby, S.D. After their marriage, they lived in the Selby-Mound City area, and later moved to Bowdle. They later moved to Roscoe, before moving to Aberdeen in 1952. Carolyn babysat for awhile and, in 1957, she became employed with St. Luke's Hospital as a nurse's aide. She worked there for 27 years before retiring in 1989.  Gottlieb died on March 6, 1981. Carolyn then volunteered for Central High School, Simmons and Holgate Jr. High, and at local nursing homes.

 Carolyn was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. She was also a member of Women of the Moose, Eagles Lodge, American Legion Auxiliary and Aberdeen Senior Citizens. She enjoyed crocheting and embroidering. Carolyn loved music and dancing and always liked to play cards with her family and friends.

 Grateful for having shared Carolyn's life are her sons: Morgan Brockel, Aberdeen; Theodore (Donna) Brockel, Aberdeen; Glenn (Donna) Brockel, Roscoe, S.D.; James (Jan) Brockel, Rapid City, S.D.; and JoeRay (Linda) Brockel, Rapid City, S.D.; 24 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren.

 She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Barbara; husband, Gottlieb; one son, Donald Brockel; four grandchildren, Tina, Nancy, Joseph and Carolyn; eight sisters; and one brother.

Magdalena 'Maggie' Bendewald

 Magdalena "Maggie" Bendewald, 96, resident of Louisville Care Center, Louisville, went to be with her Lord on Nov. 3, 2012.

 Maggie was formerly of Leola, which she called home.   

 She resided three years at Primrose Assisted Living and Aberdeen Living Center, Aberdeen, for three years before moving to Nebraska to the Louisville Care Center where she had resided for the past eight years.

Walter 'Wally' Wagemann Sr.

 Funeral service for Walter "Wally" Wagemann Sr., 79, of Aberdeen will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Tanya Rist officiating. Burial following at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Walter died on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at the Golden Living Center in Groton.

 Visitation is from 1 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen. 

 Walter "Wally" Wagemann, son of August and Martha (Heupel) Wagemann, was born on Feb. 19, 1933, 14 miles west of Forbes, N.D. He was delivered by his grandmother, Catherina Wagemann. Walter attended school in Forbes and tap danced in the first and second grades. He later attended country school west of Leola and graduated from the eighth grade. At the age of 14, he moved with his family 10 miles east of Leola. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1952 and received his honorable discharge in 1954.

 Walter was united in marriage to Shirley Schlosser on July 2, 1961. They made their home at 504 N. State Street in Aberdeen. On March 16, 1967, they moved to the farm 3 miles west of Aberdeen, where he remained until July 26, 2012, when he was hospitalized. On Aug. 2, 2012, he was moved to the Golden Living Center in Groton, where he remained until the time of his death.

 Over the years, Walter worked for several farmers on numerous thrashing crews. In 1959, he bought a farm bulk milk truck and began hauling milk around North and South Dakota. In 1962, Walter's brother, Dale, began helping with the milk hauling and in 1963, his other brother, Darwin, took an active role as well. In 1969, Walter and Darwin sold their shares of the business to Dale.

 Walter went to work for Safe Guard Industries, Hyman Freight and Murphy Truck Lines. In 1974, he went to work fulltime for Lewis Truck Line, where he remained until 1992, when his health forced him to retire following a work-related accident. For many years, Walter also did furnace cleaning and hauled rolls of paper to the Aberdeen American News. 

 Walter loved to dance, especially to polkas and waltzs. In his free time, he enjoyed playing pinochle and whist. He was an avid bowler and also enjoyed deer hunting. Walter was a member of the American Legion, Moose and Eagles for many years. For 51 years, he was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. He served on the church council, trust fund committee, served as usher and was the very first van driver. Walter loved his family and cherished the time he was able to spend with them especially his grandchildren.

 Grateful for having shared Walter's life are his wife, Shirley, of Aberdeen; daughter, Wanda Wagemann, Aberdeen; son, Walter (Diane) Wagemann Jr., Ashton; son, Wayne Wagemann, Billings, Mont.; son, Wade (Jennifer) Wagemann Sr., Aberdeen; one brother, Darwin (Lois) Wagemann; three granddaughters; one grandson; two stepgrandsons; two stepgreat-granddaughters; four stepgreat-grandsons; four sisters-in-law; and five brothers-in-law.

 Walter was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Dale and LeRoy Wagemann; sister-in-law, Joyce Schlosser; and brother-in-law, Delbert Schlosser.

 In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Zion Lutheran Church, 1723 S Main Street, Aberdeen.

Magdalena 'Maggie' Bendewald

Magdalena "Maggie" Bendewald, resident of Louisville Care Center at Louisville, Neb., went to be with her Lord on Nov. 3, 2012, at age 96. Maggie was formerly of Leola, which she called home. She also resided three years at Primrose Assisted Living, Aberdeen, and the Aberdeen Living Center, Aberdeen, for three years, before moving to Nebraska to the Louisville Care Center, where she has resided for the past eight years.

 Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at St. James Lutheran Church, Leola, with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Burial will follow at Green Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main St., Aberdeen, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. 

 Maggie Bendewald was born on Sept. 20, 1916, at Ashley, N.D., to Gottlieb and Sarah (Herman) Schaffer. This is the area where she attended rural school. She was married to John J. Bendewald on Oct. 6, 1935, at Ashley, N.D. They bought their farm northeast of Leola, where they farmed until 1957, when they moved to Leola, where she worked at the Leola Hospital until 1966. In 1966, she started working for the Leola school system in the lunchroom as a kitchen aide, where she worked for 28 years. 

 She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Leola and a member of ELCA. She also belonged to the Leola Senior Citizens and the Senior Citizens Choir.

 Maggie loved baking, gardening and being around her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also liked reading her Bible and her Portals of Prayer.

 Grateful for having shared Maggie's life are her daughter, Jennette Hoffman of Gretna, Neb.; two grandchildren, Tamara (Eric) Salverson of Gretna, Neb., and Timothy (Angela) Hoffman of Minneapolis, Minn.; and four great-grandchildren: Thomas, Reegan, and Daniel Salverson, and Vincent Mannella-Hoffman.

 Her parents, Gottlieb and Sarah Schaffer; husband, John J. Bendewald; three brothers: Emil (Olivia) Schaffer, Enoch (Violet) Schaffer, and Edwin (Ada) Schaffer; three sisters: Emilia (Ernest) Nitschke, Lydia (Reinhold) Schilling, and Viola (Otto) Gohl; and her son-in-law, Mylo Hoffman preceded her in death.

 Casketbearers will be: Timothy Hoffman, Eric and Thomas Salverson, Jim Schaffer, Gerald Bendewald, and Leslie Hoff.

Adele Rubida passed away peacefully in her sleep on Nov. 6, 2012.

 Adele was born on Oct. 18, 1926, to Freda and Edward Opheim of Mound City.

 She married Ralph Rubida on June 28, 1949, and together had four wonderful children: Susan, Alan, Roxane and Mark. 

 Prayer services are Friday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran church in rural Selby, with funeral services Saturday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m.

Genevieve Baker

Genevieve Baker, 95, of Aberdeen passed away Nov. 5, 2012, at Manor Care Nursing Home, Abderdeen.

 Genevieve was born on Jan. 6, 1917, at Ludden, N.D., to William and Lillian (Waite) Scheffert. She attended school in Ludden and Ellendale, N.D., and then attended the Normal Industrial School for three years. When money for college ran out, she and five friends traveled to California to find work.

 In July 1941, she married LeRoy Wiitala in California. Together they had four sons, Stephen, Gregg, Marc and Brent. In 1950, they moved to Frederick, when LeRoy took over the family farm from his grandfather.

 During the 1950s, Genevieve designed and created several original biblical/scripture inspired lamps, which are now on permanent display at the Dickey County Historical Society in Oakes. Although the lamps received copyrights and patents, they were never reproduced due to prohibitive cost.

 She married Leslie Baker on July 14, 1967, at Valley City, N.D. They made their home in the Guelph area for the next 30 years. Genevieve was a massage therapist, and operated a massage business in her home for many years. In 1997, they retired and moved to Aberdeen. Leslie passed away May 11, 2008, and Genevieve continued to make her home in Aberdeen. They loved to travel, and enjoyed trips, which included New Zealand, China, Australia, and the Holy Land.

 She is survived by three sons: Gregg (Laura) Wiitala, McLean, Va., Mark Wiitala, Portland, Ore., and Steve (Sheryl) Wiitala, Omaha, Neb.; two grandchildren: Douglas, Aberdeen, and Kristine Wiitala, Boston, Mass.; a sister, Francis de la Houssaye, Crowley, La.; and several nieces and nephews.

 Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leslie; a son, Brent; three brothers: Harry, Chester and Benjamin; three sisters: Irene, Hattie and Edna; and her former husband, LeRoy Wiitala.

 Visitation will be held on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Guelph Community Church, Guelph, N.D., with the funeral to follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Ludden City Cemetery, Ludden, N.D.

Alexys Paige Helm Becker

Alexys Paige Helm Becker, 8, of Aberdeen died Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital. Her funeral will be Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. The Revs. Marcia Sylvester and Tanya Rist will officiate. After the funeral service, there will be a time for fellowship and lunch at the church. Burial will be in the Rockham Cemetery. Closed-casket visitation will be Friday from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield.

 Alexys was born Dec. 17, 2003, in Pierre. She lived a vibrant life until the age of seven. She attended O.M. Tiffany Elementary School in Aberdeen. She was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome which is a blood cancer that later formed acute Myloid Leukemia.

 She spent the last almost two years in hospitals in Sioux Falls and Minneapolis.

 Alexys loved people, life and animals. She could light up a room just by walking into it. She was in dance and enjoyed her horse, Taffy.

 Alexys is survived by her parents, John and Melissa Becker and her brother, Nicholas, all of Aberdeen; her maternal grandparents, Les (Audrey) Helm of Redfield and Connie (Terry) Hull of Aberdeen; her paternal grandparents, Jim and Julie Becker of Rockham. Also her great-grandparents, Earl Schultz and Leona Becker of Redfield.

 She was preceded in death by great-grandma and grandpa Helm, great-grandma and grandpa Weisz, great-grandma, Arlene Schultz, and great-grandpa Milton Becker.
