Floyd passed away Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at Angelhaus Regional Basic Care Center in Aberdeen.
Floyd Elmer Meidinger was born on Nov. 1, 1929, to Otto and Ida (Hieb) Meidinger on his grandfather's farm southeast of Eureka. Floyd received his early education in a country school. He attended high school in Eureka, graduating with the Class of 1947. In the fall of that year, Floyd entered college at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and graduated in the spring of 1951, with a Bachelor's Degree.
Rather than being drafted into the Army, Floyd enlisted in the United States Air Force. Because he spoke German fluently, he was sent to Syracuse University in New York, from April 1952 until April 1953, for Russian language school. Floyd was then stationed in Tripoli, Libya, as an intercept operator, intercepting chatter from Russian pilots on the border of Russia and Libya, and was later sent to Germany to work as an interpreter. He received his Honorable Discharge in August 1955. Upon his return to the states, Floyd entered Law School at the University of South Dakota. Following his graduation in 1959, he began his first job with The Ivan Bormann Law Firm in Mobridge. Floyd returned to McPherson County in 1963 and was elected States Attorney, serving until 1975. By this time, Floyd had bought the Francis Holman Law Practice at Leola. He was elected several more times as States Attorney in the 1980s and 1990s, serving a total of 26 years. Floyd was the Leola City Attorney from October 1965 until July 1979. The night he resigned as city attorney, he was sworn in as Mayor. During his term, he flew to Washington, D.C., with John Sieh and many others, to lobby Congress for funding for the WEB Water System, and was instrumental in bringing it to South Dakota. Floyd's mayoral term ended in May 1986.
On Aug. 9, 1996, Floyd was united in marriage to Nicki Steckler and became stepfather to Nicki's seven sons. He played an active role in helping to raise the five younger children and could always be seen at their school functions and sporting events. Floyd loved the boys and all the grandbabies that came along.
Floyd served as Chairman of the McPherson County Republican Party. He was a Paid Up For Life member of the Roy S Hickman American Legion Post No. 78 of Leola and was its past commander. He was also a past member of the Leola Volunteer Fire Department and went on many ambulance runs and fire calls. Floyd and Nicki moved to Aberdeen in 1999, where he continued to reside until the time of his death.
Floyd enjoyed hunting, fishing, doing crossword puzzles and watching the Minnesota Vikings. As a young man, he loved playing the position of catcher for the area baseball team and was a huge fan of the New York Yankees.
Celebrating his life is his wife, Nicki Meidinger, of Aberdeen; seven stepsons, Kevin and Shelley Steckler and their children, Amber and Dustin of Garretson; Keenan and Donna Steckler and their children, Destini, Ally and David of Aberdeen; Kyle and Jennifer Steckler and their children, Jack, Mati, and Gracyn of Beaver Lake, Neb.; Toby and Pamela Steckler and their children Jamison, Gavin and Mason of Audubon, Iowa; Jon and Erin Steckler and their daughter, Sadie of Minneapolis, Minn.; Aaron Steckler of Rochester, Minn. and Mitch Steckler of Plymouth, Minn.; three nieces; two nephews; and one sister-in-law.
