 Eagle Butte: Delphia M. Zumbaum, 77 of Eagle Butte passed away Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at the Rapid City Regional Auxiliary Hospice House.

 Survivors include two daughters: Kathy (Bob) Walters, Eagle Butte and Brenda (Randy) Hveem, Rapid City; four sisters: Deloris Jefferies, Mandan, N.D.; Darlene (Milbert) Bender, Leola; Linda (LeVere) Beug, Portland, Wash.; and Tootie (Davis) Estes, Lewiston, Idaho; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

 Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at Black Hills Funeral Home, 1440 Junction Ave, Sturgis. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Black Hills Funeral Home in Sturgis, with Pastor Pauline Webb officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

 Ellendale, N.D.: Luella Vivian (Hokana) Voegeli, 86 of Ellendale died Oct. 2, 2012, at Aberdeen Health and Rehab, Aberdeen, S.D.

 She was born May 24, 1926 in Ada Township near Ellendale to Charles William and Hilda Selina (Jumisko) Hokana. She was baptized on June 12, 1926. After graduation from Ellendale High School with the class of 1944, Luella attended State Normal and Industrial College, Ellendale, where she received her emergency teaching certificate as there was a shortage of teachers during WWII. Luella taught school at Kent and Van Meter Townships.

 Luella and Clayton were married at the E.U.B Church in Ellendale on Sept. 22, 1946, by the Rev. Strutz. After marriage, Luella worked at Furman's Retail Store and Redmond Electric. After her family was raised, she worked at Prince of Peace. In 1950, Clayton and Luella purchased the Woodward farm 3 miles southeast of Ellendale. In 1960, they built a new home on the farm and she enjoyed doing the finish work. Luella instilled good work ethics in her family by involving them in farm and home projects, especially a large yard and garden. There was always an extra table setting for whoever stopped by the farm. She was known to stir up a quick, delicious meal at a moment's notice. Prior to Clayton entering the nursing home due to a farm accident, Luella spent several years caring for Clayton at home.

 In 1996, Luella purchased and refurbished a home in Ellendale, which she took great pride in. In December 1997, Clayton died and Luella continued to reside at her home until Jan. 28, 2011, when she entered Evergreen Place. Luella was active at Zion Lutheran Church being honored as a 50-year member of the LWML, and also American Legion Auxiliary. She volunteered at the Kedish House and Blood Drives. Her hobbies included Winship Homemaker's Club, whist club, ceramics, crocheting, knitting, quilting, sewing for her family and reading. Special times were family get-togethers and activities of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

 Survivors include five children: Kerry (Dale) Veland, LouAnn (John) Kaiser, all of Ellendale, Doreen (Dick) Randall, Aberdeen, Lisa (Steve) Iverson, Hatton, N.D., Richard, (Dawn) Voegeli, Oakes, N.D.; nine grandchildren: Scott and Clayton Randall, Sarah and Michael (Kristin) Kaiser, Ben (Tracy) and Seth (Katie) and Stephanie Iverson, Beau and Cody Voegeli; and two great-grandsons: Clayton Randall II and Drew Iverson.

 She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Clayton; her parents; and six siblings: Rex (Irene), Marshall (Edith), Howard (Helen), Jim (Dorothy), Hazel, and Geneva (Louis) Smith.

 The funeral service is 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Zion Lutheran Church, Ellendale, with Pastor Raymond Pomplun officiating. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale. Visitation is also one hour prior to the church service Friday. Burial is at Ellendale City Cemetery. Casket bearers are her grandchildren, Scott, Clayton, Sarah, Michael, Ben Seth, Stephanie, Beau and Cody. Arrangements by Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale.

 Hecla: Marvin Elsen, 84, of Hecla passed away Oct. 1, 2012, at Manor Care Nursing Home in Aberdeen.

 Marvin John Elsen, son of Emil and Ella (Stolle) Elsen, was born Feb. 13, 1928, at Hecla, S.D., where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from Hecla High School in 1946, and then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was united in marriage to Frances Yunker Titus on Aug. 19, 1957. They made their home in Hecla, where Marvin worked for Ralph Herseth as a mechanic for five years, before being employed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at Sand Lake Refuge for 26½ years. Marvin also farmed in the Hecla area. Frances passed away on Feb. 11, 1994.

 Marvin was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the American Legion in Hecla since 1954.

 He is survived by a son, Ronald Elsen, Hecla; a daughter, Colleen (Del) Taylor, Anderson, Alaska; and two grandchildren: Emily and Melissa Elsen, Brooklyn, N.Y. He is also survived by a brother, Merlyn Elsen, Hecla; two sisters: Marie Willey, Ellendale, N.D., and Mavis Howland, Hecla; a sister-in-law, LaVon Elsen, Aberdeen; a brother-in-law, Keith Larson, Aberdeen; and numerous step grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

 Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Frances; two brothers: William and Bernard; and a sister, Marvel Larson.

 Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at St John's Lutheran Church, Hecla, from 1 to 2 p.m., with the funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be at the Hecla City Cemetery.

 Ellendale, N.D.: Memorial service for Ruby Hagen, 93, of Ellendale will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at Prince of Peace Care Center Peace Chapel in Ellendale. The Rev. Paul Henschen will officiate.

 Ruby died Oct. 1, 2012, at Prince of Peace Care Center.

 Ruby Ileen Hicks, daughter of Robert G. and Helen Harriet (Cotton) Hicks, was born Aug. 11, 1919, at Cleveland, N.D., in Stutsman County. She moved to Aberdeen at a young age with her parents. She attended schools in Aberdeen, graduating from Central High School with the class of 1936. She worked at several places in the area, moving back to North Dakota, where she began nursing training at Mercy Hospital in Williston, N.D. She graduated in 1942, and became a registered nurse, beginning employment with St. Joseph's Hospital in Dickinson, N.D.

 She was united in marriage to Max Hagen on Oct. 6, 1942, in Aberdeen after he returned from Officers training and was home on leave. They moved to Oregon and Washington states, where he continued training for deployment for duty overseas. Ruby continued working in Minneapolis, Minn., Oakes, N.D., and Ellendale. Her last place of employment was at Prince of Peace Care Center in Ellendale, when she retired at the age of 75 years.

 Ruby's life was dedicated to the nursing profession. She became a resident at Prince of Peace Care Center on March 19, 2005.

 Ruby is survived by one sister, Helen Hammond of Kent, Wash.; one brother, Harry (Cleo) Hicks of Bismarck, N.D.; sister-in-law, Ruth (Joe) Hagen Klein of Bismarck, N.D.; and several nieces and nephews who dearly loved her.

 Her parents; husband, Max (9-15-2001); five brother-in-laws: Lawrence, Leonard, Roland and Donald Hagen and Mike Hammond; five sister-in-laws; Myrtle, Eva, Marjorie, Betty and Annamay preceded her in death.

 The family prefers memorials to Prince of Peace Care Center.

 Marjorie passed away Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen after a lengthy battle with cancer.

 Marjorie Louise Hayden was born on June 8, 1942, in Wann, Okla., to Roy and Thelma (Stowe) Hayden. She graduated high school at Wann.

 Marge was united in marriage to Charles Miller on June 9, 1960. They had three children: two daughters, Debra Miller of Aberdeen and Leisa (Cary) Logan of Hartford and one son, Charles Lee (Jennifer) Miller of Fort Collins, Colo..

 Marge and Charles moved to Bath in 1970 and later relocated to Aberdeen, where she continued to reside until the time of her death.

 In addition to her husband and children, Marge left behind three grandchildren: Jason Logan, Michael Logan and Abby Jo Miller; and was blessed with a great-granddaughter, Zoe Ann Logan on June 1, 2012. She is also survived by nine siblings: Jimmy Hayden, Hank Hayden, Dortha Herrington, Kenneth Hayden, Clarence Hayden, Martha Johnson, Lenta Mae Kump, Bill Hayden and Dick Hayden.

 Marge is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Lewis Hayden; and two sisters: Jeanine Ford and Mary Ryan.

 The family wishes to recognize the doctors and staff at Conklin Care Center for their care, love and support during her illness.

 In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Conklin Regional Cancer Center, 620 3rd Ave. S.E., Aberdeen, SD 57401 in Memory of Marjorie Miller. All donations received are used locally to assist with living expenses for current patients.

 James Edward Tosh Jr. was born in Louisville, Ky., on Oct. 3, 1954, to James and Audrey (Dinger) Tosh Sr.

 Jim moved to South Dakota in 1960, and attended schools in Hecla, Britton, and Aberdeen. He graduated from Central High in 1972.

 He married Julie Hansen in 1979. Jim worked at K.O. Lee Co. and for the city of Aberdeen. In 2000, he started Nite Life Limo Service. He recently worked at Harr Motors.

 He was a demo derby enthusiast and participant. He loved building, collecting and selling model cars as well as classic cars. He was a member of a local car club and enjoyed car shows more than ever. He had two children whom he loved more than anything, his daughter, Jennifer Leigh Tosh of Watertown, Minn., and his son, Jamison Skyler Tosh of Aberdeen. His greatest love was his grandson, Kamren James Tosh and he was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his second grandson.

 Jim had recently been in a car accident, but recovered well. On Oct. 10, he suffered a massive heart attack and was taken from us all too soon.

 Jim was a kind man, a man of generosity who would help the helpless and give hope to the hopeless. He was a loyal and caring man. We are all so fortunate and blessed to have had him as a part of our life.

 Jim is survived by his daughter, Jennifer; his son, Jamison; his grandson, Kamren; and his brother, Steven Tosh.

 He was preceded in death by his mother; father; and maternal and paternal grandparents.

 There is a memorial fund in his name at any Wells Fargo Bank if anyone wishes to make a donation.

 Aberdeen: Services for Jill R. Salwei, 34, of Aberdeen will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Robert Myers and Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Aberdeen.

 Jill died Saturday, Oct. 6, at her home.

 Jill Renee Salwei was born on April 4, 1978, at Robinsdale, Minn., to Dennis and Sharron (Salem) Salwei. She grew up in Minnesota and graduated from Coon Rapids High School with the class of 1996. She moved to Aberdeen in 2000, where she was living at the time of her death.

 Jill was a member of First Baptist Church, Aberdeen. She loved doing arts, crafts and playing games. She had a servant's heart and was willing to help anyone. She really missed her grandmother, Beulah. Jill will be missed by her daughter, Kaitlyn, parents and family.

 Grateful for having shared Jill's life are her daughter, Kaitlyn, Coon Rapids, Minn.; parents, Dennis and Sharron Salwei, Coon Rapids, Minn.; brother, Wayde Salwei; grandfather, Dr. Harold E. Salem, Aberdeen; grandmother, Dorothy Salwei, Minneapolis, Minn.; several uncles, aunts, nephews and cousins.

Robert 'Bobby' Dreis

 Hoven: Robert "Bobby" Dreis, 56, Hoven, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at his home. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Hoven, with Father Kevin Doyle as celebrant. Organist will be Alice Simon and St. Anthony's Church Choir will sing. Bobby's niece, nephews, daughter and son-in-law will be offertory gift bearers and will place the pall. Lector will be Don Seurer, Eucharistic minister will be Kathy Dreis, and Mass server will be Peter Rausch.

 Visitation will begin at the church 5 p.m. Friday, with a wake service at 7 p.m.

 Robert George Dreis, son of Mary (Seurer) and William Dreis, was born at Holy Infant Hospital in Hoven on Sept. 20, 1956. He was raised on his family's farm five miles north and one mile east of Hoven. His formal education consisted of St. Anthony's Catholic School and Hoven High School, Class of 1974. He went on to farm with his dad and helped on neighboring farms. In the mid-1990's, Bill retired and Bobby took over operation of the farm and ranch.

 Bobby married Jean (Arbach) Reuer at Hoven on Sept. 21, 2001. They settled in Hoven and Bobby continued farming. He was diagnosed with liver cancer January 2012.

 Bobby belonged to St. Anthony's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a faithful church member who had committed himself to perpetual adoration. He served his community and was currently on the Walworth County Conservation Board and was formerly on the Hoven Equity Board. He belonged to Future Farmers of America (FFA) in high school and as an adult was an FFA mentor. Bobby's politics were very conservative and while doing his farming, he found listening to talk radio to be very enlightening as well as an entertaining pastime.

 He loved animals and they loved him. Most candid photos of Bobby also have at least one animal in it. As Jean said, "Bobby loved life, farming and family."

 Bobby is survived by his wife, Jean; one daughter, Aimee (Jay) Arbach of Las Vegas, Nev.; his grandson, Bryce Arbach, who meant the world to him; his sister-in-law, Kathy Dreis and her and Art's children: Casey (Stacy) Dreis of Brookings, Patrick (Tina) Dreis of Milbank, Scott (Laura) Dreis of Aberdeen, and Erin Dreis of Pierre; and five great-nieces and nephews.

 He was preceded in death by his father, on Oct. 5, 2006; his mother, on May 26, 1988; and his brother, Art on May 24, 2005.

 Casketbearers will be Jerry Brickner, Michael Seurer, Charles Simon, and Gary Arbach of Hoven, David Kaup of Balaton, Minn., and Darrell Seurer of Casper, Wyo.

Herbert 'Speedy' Kolb

 Westport: Funeral service for Herbert "Speedy" Kolb, 85, Westport, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 915 S. Dakota St., Aberdeen. Pastor D. Thomas Rawerts will be officiating. Burial following in Green Mound Cemetery in Leola at 1 p.m. Saturday.

 Herbert died on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at his home.

 Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

 Herbert Kolb, son of Gottlieb and Carolina (Herrmann) Kolb, was born on April 16, 1927, on a farm near Leola. This is the area where he was raised and attended country school through the eighth grade. He helped on the family farm prior to his enlistment in the United States Army on Sept. 28, 1945. Herbert received his honorable discharge on Feb. 20, 1947.

 Herbert was united in marriage to Ruth Schumack on March 14, 1948, in Leola. They made their home on a farm northeast of Leola until 1950, when they moved to a farm near Hecla. In 1951, they began making their home in Westport and in 1978, moved to a farm near Westport, where Herbert remained until the time of his death. His beloved wife, Ruth, died on March 27, 2008.

 Herbert was always playing cards and driving around. He loved horses and especially cherished the times he was able to spend with his family and friends.

 Grateful for having shared Herbert's life are two sons: Robert (Kristi) Kolb and Steve (Terri) Kolb, both of Westport; grandchildren: Mathew and Quentin Kolb, Miranda Kolb, Jessica Ross, Jamie (Grady) Ollhoff and Karrie (Justin) Walters; great-grandchildren: Newman Ross, Riley, Owen and Ethan Ollhoff and Ashley and Carter Walters; siblings: Albert (Esther) Kolb, Gilbert Kolb, Adeline Kolb, Hilda Melland, Ella Tschappat and Violet Fauth; brother-in-law, Otto Sperle; sister-in-law, Elda Kolb; and many nieces and nephews.

 Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Kenneth; brothers: Gottlieb, Reinhold, Louie and Harold Kolb; and sisters: Helen Kvasnicka and Alvina Sperle.

Thomas 'Skip' Leonard Sloan

 Thomas went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, in Wausau, Wis.

 Thomas "Skip" Leonard Sloan was born on April 8, 1936, in Aberdeen, S.D., to Thomas and Gertrude (Palmer) Sloan.

 Thomas lived a life of love and kindness. He was always in a good mood and willing to help with any task or project. He loved spending time with family, playing the piano, playing cards and drinking coffee.

 Some would say that Thomas was blessed to have us in his life, but the truth is, we were the one who were blessed to have him in ours. We truly miss you Skipper.

 Survivors include two nephews: David (June) Ullman and Steve DeCory; and one niece, Janean (Scott) Olson.

 He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Robert, John, Raymond and Richard; and two sisters: Judith Sloan and Dorothy Ullman.

 The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, staff and adult day care providers that cared for Skip over the past year as he battled cancer.

 Mesa, Ariz.: Marlyse Anne Scott, 50, of Mesa, Ariz., passed away suddenly on Oct. 2, 2012.

 Marlyse was born in Norfolk, Va., on April 22, but grew up in Aberdeen, S.D. She studied and taught Interior Design and worked in the field for many years. She loved animals. She had a deep appreciation for blue's music and in particular, Stevie Ray Vaughan.

 Marlyse is survived by her loving husband, Charles R (Randy) Scott; and her two brothers: Phil Schroeder, Sun City West, Ariz., and Chris (Sue) Schroeder, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and 11 nieces and nephews.

 Proceeded in death by her parents, John and Marie Schroeder, Sun City, Ariz.; and her godson, Christopher Gillespie.

 Visitation will be held on Saturday Oct. 13, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bunkers Family University Chapel 3529 E. University Drive, Mesa, AZ 85213, with a rosary at 7 p.m.

 Forbes, N.D.: Mass of Christian burial for James "Jim" Brokaw, 80, of rural Forbes will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at St. Helena's Catholic Church in Ellendale. The Rev. John Kizito will officiate.

 Burial in Ellendale City Cemetery.

 Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., with a rosary at 6:45 p.m. and a liturgical wake service at 7 p.m. at the church.

 Jim died Oct. 9, 2012, at his home with his wife of 60 years at his side.

 Jim was born on Sept. 20, 1932, in Oak Gulch Township, Day County, to Lloyd and Ann (Sjerven) Brokaw. He grew up near Bristol and worked with his dad doing custom haying. In 1946, they moved to a farm near Forbes. He graduated from Forbes in 1949, obtained a teaching certificate from Ellendale College, and taught in a rural school near Long Lake.

 He was united in marriage to E. Joanne Ladd on Sept. 6, 1952, at St. Helena's Catholic Church. In 1959, they moved their family to Spring Valley Township, where they ranched and raised their nine children.

 He was an avid baseball player and he pitched for the Forbes' amateur team. Time spent playing was some of the most enjoyable times of his life. He loved watching the Twins play every chance he got; he and Joanne celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a Twins game. Jim had a great love for horses, teaching and kids, and stayed involved by serving as a 4-H leader for many years. He worked with kids passing on what he knew whenever he had the chance.

 Another interest that he dedicated his time to was quarter horses and horse shows. He was a member of Maud Evans Saddle Club and he took the family to horse shows and rodeos on weekends, between milking cows. A trip to the N.D. State Fair every year was a highlight. He also raised border collies and spent hours training them as cattle dogs.

 Jim was a member of the Democratic NPL party, was a precinct committeeman and served as a legislator for District 28 for 14 years. He was a long time member of ND Farmers Union; he served as Dickey County Farmers Union President for several years.

 Jim is survived by his wife, Joanne; nine children: Greg (Mary Kay), Ashley; Kim (Cheryl), Ellendale; Kevin (Jackie), Forbes; Kay (Keith) Kronberg, Forbes; Lois Baer, Ellendale; Mary Jo (Norm) Fries, Steele; Carol (Doug) Kindelspire, Leola; Lynn Brokaw (Tom Samson), Bismarck; and Lloyd Brokaw (Mark), Crookston, Minn.; 25 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren; one brother, Leslie (Geraldine) Brokaw, Renton, Wash.; and two sisters: Lucille Meyer, Spokane, Wash., and Joanne Merkel, Forbes.

 He was preceded in death by one grandson, Brad Brokaw; great-grandchild, Eleanor Fries; and two sisters: Marion Hutman, Denver, Colo., and Betty Olson, Bristol.

 Casketbearers will be Jim's grandsons. Gift bearers will be Jim's granddaughters. The organist is Mavis Breitag and special music by Afton and Brett Samson. The lectors will be Norm and Mary Jo Fries.

 Carlsen Funeral Home of Ellendale has been entrusted with the arrangements.
