Marlyse Anne Scott

Mesa, Ariz.: Marlyse Anne Scott, 50, of Mesa, Ariz., passed away suddenly on Oct. 2, 2012.

Marlyse was born in Norfolk, Va., on April 22, but grew up in Aberdeen, S.D. She studied and taught Interior Design and worked in the field for many years. She loved animals. She had a deep appreciation for blue's music and in particular, Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Marlyse is survived by her loving husband, Charles R (Randy) Scott; and her two brothers: Phil Schroeder, Sun City West, Ariz., and Chris (Sue) Schroeder, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and 11 nieces and nephews.

Proceeded in death by her parents, John and Marie Schroeder, Sun City, Ariz.; and her godson, Christopher Gillespie.

Visitation will be held on Saturday Oct. 13, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bunkers Family University Chapel 3529 E. University Drive, Mesa, AZ 85213, with a rosary at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local hospice in Marlyse's name.

Thomas went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, in Wausau, Wis.

Thomas Skip Leonard Sloan was born on April 8, 1936, in Aberdeen, S.D., to Thomas and Gertrude (Palmer) Sloan.

Thomas lived a life of love and kindness. He was always in a good mood and willing to help with any task or project. He loved spending time with family, playing the piano, playing cards and drinking coffee.

Some would say that Thomas was blessed to have us in his life, but the truth is, we were the one who were blessed to have him in ours. We truly miss you Skipper.

Survivors include two nephews: David (June) Ullman and Steve DeCory; and one niece, Janean (Scott) Olson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Robert, John, Raymond and Richard; and two sisters: Judith Sloan and Dorothy Ullman.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, staff and adult day care providers that cared for Skip over the past year as he battled cancer.

James 'Jim' Brokaw

Forbes, N.D.: Mass of Christian burial for James Jim Brokaw, 80, of rural Forbes will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at St. Helena's Catholic Church in Ellendale. The Rev. John Kizito will officiate.

Burial in Ellendale City Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., with a rosary at 6:45 p.m. and a liturgical wake service at 7 p.m. at the church.

Jim died Oct. 9, 2012, at his home with his wife of 60 years at his side.

Jim was born on Sept. 20, 1932, in Oak Gulch Township, Day County, to Lloyd and Ann (Sjerven) Brokaw. He grew up near Bristol and worked with his dad doing custom haying. In 1946, they moved to a farm near Forbes. He graduated from Forbes in 1949, obtained a teaching certificate from Ellendale College, and taught in a rural school near Long Lake.

He was united in marriage to E. Joanne Ladd on Sept. 6, 1952, at St. Helena's Catholic Church. In 1959, they moved their family to Spring Valley Township, where they ranched and raised their nine children.

He was an avid baseball player and he pitched for the Forbes' amateur team. Time spent playing was some of the most enjoyable times of his life. He loved watching the Twins play every chance he got; he and Joanne celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a Twins game. Jim had a great love for horses, teaching and kids, and stayed involved by serving as a 4-H leader for many years. He worked with kids passing on what he knew whenever he had the chance.

Another interest that he dedicated his time to was quarter horses and horse shows. He was a member of Maud Evans Saddle Club and he took the family to horse shows and rodeos on weekends, between milking cows. A trip to the N.D. State Fair every year was a highlight. He also raised border collies and spent hours training them as cattle dogs.

Jim was a member of the Democratic NPL party, was a precinct committeeman and served as a legislator for District 28 for 14 years. He was a long time member of ND Farmers Union; he served as Dickey County Farmers Union President for several years.

Jim is survived by his wife, Joanne; nine children: Greg (Mary Kay), Ashley; Kim (Cheryl), Ellendale; Kevin (Jackie), Forbes; Kay (Keith) Kronberg, Forbes; Lois Baer, Ellendale; Mary Jo (Norm) Fries, Steele; Carol (Doug) Kindelspire, Leola; Lynn Brokaw (Tom Samson), Bismarck; and Lloyd Brokaw (Mark), Crookston, Minn.; 25 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren; one brother, Leslie (Geraldine) Brokaw, Renton, Wash.; and two sisters: Lucille Meyer, Spokane, Wash., and Joanne Merkel, Forbes.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Brad Brokaw; great-grandchild, Eleanor Fries; and two sisters: Marion Hutman, Denver, Colo., and Betty Olson, Bristol.

Casketbearers will be Jim's grandsons. Gift bearers will be Jim's granddaughters. The organist is Mavis Breitag and special music by Afton and Brett Samson. The lectors will be Norm and Mary Jo Fries.

Herbert 'Speedy' Kolb

Westport: Funeral service for Herbert "Speedy" Kolb, 85, Westport, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 915 S. Dakota St., Aberdeen. Pastor D. Thomas Rawerts will be officiating. Burial following in Green Mound Cemetery in Leola at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Herbert died on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at his home.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Herbert Kolb, son of Gottlieb and Carolina (Herrmann) Kolb, was born on April 16, 1927, on a farm near Leola. This is the area where he was raised and attended country school through the eighth grade. He helped on the family farm prior to his enlistment in the United States Army on Sept. 28, 1945. Herbert received his honorable discharge on Feb. 20, 1947.

Herbert was united in marriage to Ruth Schumack on March 14, 1948, in Leola. They made their home on a farm northeast of Leola until 1950, when they moved to a farm near Hecla. In 1951, they began making their home in Westport and in 1978, moved to a farm near Westport, where Herbert remained until the time of his death. His beloved wife, Ruth, died on March 27, 2008.

Herbert was always playing cards and driving around. He loved horses and especially cherished the times he was able to spend with his family and friends.

Grateful for having shared Herbert's life are two sons: Robert (Kristi) Kolb and Steve (Terri) Kolb, both of Westport; grandchildren: Mathew and Quentin Kolb, Miranda Kolb, Jessica Ross, Jamie (Grady) Ollhoff and Karrie (Justin) Walters; great-grandchildren: Newman Ross, Riley, Owen and Ethan Ollhoff and Ashley and Carter Walters; siblings: Albert (Esther) Kolb, Gilbert Kolb, Adeline Kolb, Hilda Melland, Ella Tschappat and Violet Fauth; brother-in-law, Otto Sperle; sister-in-law, Elda Kolb; and many nieces and nephews.

Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Kenneth; brothers: Gottlieb, Reinhold, Louie and Harold Kolb; and sisters: Helen Kvasnicka and Alvina Sperle.

Aberdeen: Services for Jill R. Salwei, 34, of Aberdeen will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Robert Myers and Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Aberdeen.

Jill died Saturday, Oct. 6, at her home.

Jill Renee Salwei was born on April 4, 1978, at Robinsdale, Minn., to Dennis and Sharron (Salem) Salwei. She grew up in Minnesota and graduated from Coon Rapids High School with the class of 1996. She moved to Aberdeen in 2000, where she was living at the time of her death.

Jill was a member of First Baptist Church, Aberdeen. She loved doing arts, crafts and playing games. She had a servant's heart and was willing to help anyone. She really missed her grandmother, Beulah. Jill will be missed by her daughter, Kaitlyn, parents and family.

Grateful for having shared Jill's life are her daughter, Kaitlyn, Coon Rapids, Minn.; parents, Dennis and Sharron Salwei, Coon Rapids, Minn.; brother, Wayde Salwei; grandfather, Dr. Harold E. Salem, Aberdeen; grandmother, Dorothy Salwei, Minneapolis, Minn.; several uncles, aunts, nephews and cousins.

 Spearfish: Edna Schnabel, 93, of Spearfish and formerly of Pierre, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.

 Edna Miller was born on Nov. 7, 1918, at Isabel to William and Ida (Finkbeiner) Miller. She grew up on a farm near Isabel. She attended rural schools there and graduated from Isabel High School in 1936.

 In 1936, her family moved to a farm near Roscoe. She attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen. She taught rural schools for six years.

 On March 25, 1947, she was married to Theodore J. Schnabel. They lived on a farm near Hosmer for several years. In 1952, they moved to Aberdeen. In 1967, they moved to Pierre. Edna worked as a rural school teacher, as a cook for many years at the Statehouse Café, and then as a night auditor at a motel until she retired. In the fall of 2005, she moved to Spearfish.

 Surviving her are her daughters: Shirley Ann Amburn, Spearfish, and Patty Rae (Dennis) McQuay, Pierre; grandchildren: Lindsay Bruckner, Pierre, and Michael Amburn, Spearfish; sister, Joy (Clarence) Voegele, Roscoe; brother, Edwin (Leona) Miller, Bartlett, Tenn.; various nieces and nephews; stepbrothers: Irvin Hettich and Wilburt "Bandy" Hettich; and stepsisters: Deloris Lehr and Elsie Hanson.

 She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore; son, Jerry; parents; four sisters; and three brothers.

 Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, Grace Fellowship Church in Spearfish, with Pastor Steve Miller officiating. Burial will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, at Riverside Cemetery in Pierre.

 DeRae Kay Nishek, daughter of Harold and Hilgegard (Speidel) Nishek, was born Nov. 9, 1950 in Aberdeen. She grew up in Ellendale, graduating from Ellendale High School. She then graduated in 1972 from the University of North Dakota with a bachelors of science degree in medical technology. She moved to Palm Springs, Calif., and worked for two years before moving to Riyadh Saudi Arabia, where she worked at King Faisal Specialist Hospital for 14 years.

 She was united in marriage to Mukesh Prabhu on August 23, 1986, in Zion Lutheran Church in Ellendale. They made their home in Arlington, Texas, and she was employed at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

 DeRae was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Arlington, and the Legion Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, both in Ellendale.

 DeRae is survived by her husband, Mukesh; one son, Kieran Prabhu; two daughters, Tara Kay Prabhu and Keren Valdez, all of Arlington, Texas; two stepsisters, Lisa Rains of Ellendale and Jean Lutz of Bismarck; and one stepbrother, Bruce Stairs of Glendive, Mont.

 Her parents; stepmother; one brother, Greg Nishek; and one stepbrother, Robert Stairs preceded her in death.

 Casketbearers will be Kieran Prabhu, Brad Nishek, Loren Nishek, Shane Peterson, Jason Peterson, Dale Veland and Paul Veland.

 The organist will be Pat Rutschke and the soloist is Wayne Fiechtner.

Della A. Fields

 Mina: Della A. Fields, 95, formerly of Mina, passed away in Imperial Beach, Calif., on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012.

 Arrangements were made by Glen Abbey Mortuary, Bonita, Calif., and a memorial service was held on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, at Little Chapel of the Roses, Bonita, Calif.

 Della A. Cessna, daughter of Minnie (Nultemeier) and Howard Cessna, was born as a twin to Ellen M. Cessna on Nov. 28, 1916, in Stebbins, N.D. At age 8, they moved to South Dakota, where they attended rural school and worked with their parents.

 Della was united in marriage to George Fields in 1936 in McIntosh. They settled in Imperial Beach, Calif., where George was a border patrol agent until he was drafted into the Navy. When he was released from the Navy, George and Della owned and managed a café in Imperial Beach. Later, George worked for the Imperial Beach School System and Della became a full-time housewife and mother. George passed away July 1990.

 Della will always be remembered for her easy laugh, her kindness and her open hugs. Della enjoyed cooking, baking, fishing, old time music and growing flowers.

 Della is survived by three sisters: her twin, Ellen M. Papke of Mina; Naomi Lussier of Sioux Falls; and Olive Van Gelder of Rocky Ford, Colo.; two daughters: Esther (Rudy) Carter and Naomi Sumner; six grandchildren and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.

 She was preceded in death by her father in 1979; her mother in 1955; her husband; two sisters: Doris Heitz and Doreen Mathes; one brother: Oliver Cessna; and a set of infant twin brothers.
