Mass of Christian burial for Robert "Bob" Mecseji, Grandpa "Bobcat", 74, of Aberdeen will be 10:30 a.m.j Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen. The Rev. Shaun Haggerty will officiate. A time of fellowship will immediately follow in the church hall.
Burial will then follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
There will be a rosary and liturgical wake service at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, with visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Bob passed away at his home on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, after a lengthy illness and with his wife of 53 years at his side.
Robert Allen Mecseji was born Oct. 13, 1938, to Joseph and Mary (Molner) Mecseji in Omaha, Neb. He was raised in Omaha, attending Omaha North High School, where he met the love of his life Judy. Bob was a Nebraska State High School Wrestling Champion at 112 pounds his senior year of high school. He then attended the University of Nebraska Lincoln on a wrestling scholarship.
He married Judy Huntley on Oct. 17, 1959, and after working a short time for the Union Pacific Railroad, he began his career at IBM. He was transferred in 1965 to Aberdeen, where they raised four beautiful children, Pam, Mark, David and Mary. After his retirement from IBM, he worked at various places in Aberdeen until his full retirement in 1997.
Bob was an integral part of the Aberdeen Elks Diving Team from 1971 to 1983. He served as a diving judge for numerous events including the Junior Olympics. His wife, Judy, was the coach, but Bob accompanied her on every trip as driver, judge, and cheerleader. He was most proud of his "Mr. Wonderful" trophy awarded by his wife for all of his help with diving. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 47 years. He was also a member of the Elks Club and a past Chamber Ambassador.
Bob enjoyed playing bridge, playing the piano, golfing, working in his yard, spending time with his family, especially his nine grandchildren, and watching Nebraska football. You could find him with three TV's, a computer and a radio listening to every game. He enjoyed his frequent chats with his boys, analyzing the latest NSU, Big 10 or Pac-12 information.
Bob had a fabulous sense of humor and you could always count on him to be the life of the party. He was an amazing poet and pianist. His family and friends looked forward to the poems that he wrote for all the special occasions in their lives. It was also a treat for his family to come home and hear the beautiful music that he generated from the piano.
Bob is survived by his wife, Judy, of 53 years; their children, Pam (Kendell) Titze and their children, Shane and Kendra; Mark (Colleen) Mecseji and their children, Eric, James and Elizabeth; David (Erin) Mecseji and their children, Olivia and Amelia; and Mary (Mike) Couture and their children, Michelle and Madysen. He is also survived by his sister, Lucy Depyper; his sister-in-laws, Orpha Mecseji, Jackie Ferguson and Sherri Huntley; his brother-in-laws, Arch Ferguson and Jon Huntley, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Mashal Mecseji; his parents, Joe and Mary Mecseji; his brother, Joe Mecseji and his brother-in-law, John Depyper.
Honorary urnbearers will be LeRoy Adams, Don Grey, Erin Mecseji, Arden Gilbert, Colleen Mecseji and Jim Larson.
Urnbearers will be John Bishop, Jon Oster, Rick Pesek, Michael Couture, Kendell Titze and Arch Ferguson.
The organist and cantor will be Charlene Blondo; lector is Jerry Mattern; usher is Scott Cunningham and offertory gifts will be presented by Bob's grandchildren, Shane Titze, Kendra Titze, Eric Mecseji, James Mecseji, Elizabeth Mecseji, Michelle Couture, Madysen Couture, Olivia Mecseji and Amelia Mecseji.
Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory of Aberdeen has been entrusted with the arrangements.
