Sister Del Rey Thieman

Aberdeen: Sister Del Rey Thieman, 77, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown.

 Mass of Christian burial for Sister Del Rey will be Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at 11 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Chapel, Presentation Convent, Aberdeen.

 A scriptural wake service will be Sunday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Sunday.

 The Rev. John Lantsberger and the Rev. David Krogman will be the celebrants.

 Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen, in charge of arrangements.

 Barbara Joann was born Nov. 13, 1935, on a farm near Wessington to Elizabeth (Matthews) Thieman and Henry Thieman. She attended elementary and secondary schools in Wessington and was valedictorian for both. She entered Presentation Convent on Jan. 1, 1955, and made her first profession of vows on Aug. 10, 1957.

 Sister Del Rey graduated from Presentation College in Aberdeen in 1957 and received her BA degree from Fontbonne College in St. Louis, Mo., in 1960. Sister earned a Master's Degree  from St. Louis University in 1967, did post-graduate work in Theology of Religious Life at St. Louis University 1974-75 and at the Institute of Spiritual Formation, Loyola University, 1986-87.

 After teaching high school in Mitchell and Dell Rapids, she assumed the ministry of formation of new members for the Presentation Sisters. Lay people in Aberdeen learned of her work with the Presentation community and asked her to provide her services of spiritual formation to them as well. This led to Sister Del Rey beginning a full-time ministry to adults of various faith backgrounds in spiritual direction and retreat work.

 In 1982, Sister Del Rey was elected vice president of the Presentation sisters. Upon completing her term in office, Sister moved to Sioux Falls and continued her ministry of spiritual direction and retreats, and ecumenical ministry.

 Sister Del Rey is survived by her community of Presentation Sisters; two sisters: Jan Almquist of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mary Neal of Salem, Ore.; and nieces and nephews.

 Sister Del Rey was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Elizabeth Thieman.

 Memorial preference is to the Presentation Hispanic Ministries.

 Casket bearers are: Jack, Tom, Eric, Ben Almquist and Marvin, Matthew and Lyle Rowen.

Leola: The funeral service for Nicholas A. Gill, 27, of Leola will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Leola High School Gymnasium.

 Burial will follow at Green Mound Cemetery in Leola. Don Peck will lead the service.

 Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the school gymnasium.

 Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.

 Nick was born Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1984, to Jason Gill and Dianne Sudlow. He spent his early years in Leola. He attended grade school in Deadwood, where he loved being a part of the Cub Scouts and playing Little League baseball.

 He went to high school in Leola, where he was active in football, band, basketball, wrestling and track. Nick graduated from Leola High School in 2003. He then attended Northern State University, where he received bachelor's degrees in business management and banking and financing.

 After college, Nick continued to make Leola his home. He enjoyed his work with kids at the Dakota House and later as a caregiver in group home settings. He found profound enjoyment in helping young people find their way in life. His love for working with youth led him to giving back to his community, where he had coached Little League baseball.

 Nick liked to trap, hunt, fish and work on cars. He was a natural at body work. He enjoyed gardening and sharing the fruits of his labor with others. He also enjoyed stock car racing and had even raced in several enduros. Nick played softball in Aberdeen, where his personality shined among many new friends.

 Ultimately, Nick was an unassuming and giving young man that touched the lives of many. He loved to make others laugh and to leave them with a smile.

 Nicholas died at his residence in Leola.

 Remembering Nick's kindness and caring are his parents, Jason (Dori) Gill of Leola and Dianne Fuehrer of Aberdeen; his brothers: Nicholas Smith of Minneapolis, Mitchell Hanes of Aberdeen, Toby Hanes of Edgemont, Brandon Podhrasky of Leola, and Mike Fuehrer and Bryson Fuehrer, both of Aberdeen; sisters: Madison Gill and Sydney Gill, both of Fargo, N.D., Leslie Hanes of Aberdeen, Alyssa Podhrasky of Aberdeen, and Carlee Gill and Shaylee Gill, both of Leola; maternal grandmother, Donna Ishmael of Aberdeen and paternal grandmother, Bonnie Gill of Leola; a large extended family and many friends.

 His paternal grandfather, Loren Gill; maternal grandfather, Chester Tobalsky; cousins: Erin Nicole Gill and Don Daly III; and stepfather, Don Fuehrer, preceded him in death.

 Gordon, Neb.: Clarice Elwood Geersen, 94, passed away Nov. 15, 2012, at Gordon Countryside Care in Gordon, Neb.

 Memorial services were held at Grace Lutheran Church in Gordon.

 Clarice Marine Gunderson was born Sept. 15, 1918, to Guy and Millie (Erickson) Gunderson, near Quinn, S.D. The family moved to Warner when she was 3, then to a farm three miles north of Warner, living there until 1929, when they moved to Aberdeen.

 She graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1936, after which she attended Northern State Teachers College, receiving her state teaching certificate.

 Here, she met Elmer "Pert" Elwood, a young area farmer, and they were married in 1939. In 1943, Clarice and the children moved to Aberdeen and lived there while Pert served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1947, they returned to their farm near Batesland, where they lived for the next 30 years.

 Clarice continued her education, receiving her bachelor's degree from Northern State Teachers College and her master's degree from Black Hills State College. She worked for Shannon County Schools as a teacher, librarian and assistant administrator. She started the bookmobile program on the Pine Ridge Reservation and setting up many libraries in the schools.

 Pert died very suddenly in 1975, at age 59. Clarice remained on the farm until 1978, when she married Albert Geersen, moving to his farm near Martin. She continued to work at Shannon County Schools until 1982. Albert died in 1991 and, in 1992, she purchased a house in Gordon, Neb., and moved to town.

 She is survived by her three children: Sharon (Ken) Hardin, Gordon, Neb.; Robert (Shirley) Elwood, Metairie, La.; and Shirley (Loren) Paul, Gordon, Neb.; sisters: Elaine Roth and Ruth (George) Casanova, Aberdeen; sisters-in-law: Naomi Alexander, Aberdeen; Lula Elwood and Odessa Elwood, both of Gordon, Neb.; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

 She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer "Pert" Elwood; husband, Albert Geersen; great-grandson, Wade Ginkens; brothers: Russell Alexander and Stan Gunderson; sisters: Beatrice Goulette, Jeanne Dingman and Gloria Hartzell; sister-in-law, Helen Gunderson; and brothers-in-law: Francis Elwood, Troy Elwood and Wesley Elwood.


Robert 'Bob' Harold Nelson

 Northville: The memorial service for Robert "Bob" Harold Nelson, 69, of Northville will be 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen, with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Private family burial will be at Warner Township Cemetery at a later time. Robert died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at Mayo Clinic, Rochester Minn.

 Robert Harold Nelson was born Nov. 7, 1943, to Harold and Gertrude (Voss) Nelson in Aberdeen. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Northville, graduating from Northville High School in 1961. In February 1962, Robert joined the U.S. Air Force and served until 1965. After being honorably discharged, Robert returned to farm near Northville.

 On May 20, 1966, Robert married Nancy Brick in Aberdeen. They made their home on a farm near Northville. Robert worked for Twin City Fan in Aberdeen for almost 10 years.

 Robert was a farmer at heart. He loved everything about it, and especially enjoyed raising cattle. He was a strong Republican who loved to argue politics.

 Grateful for having shared Robert's life are his wife, Nancy, of Northville; two sons: Michael (Rhonda) Nelson of Huron and Neil (Dana) Nelson of Mellette; his daughter, Lisa (Ed) Falcon of Aberdee; eight grandchildren: Sarah Hauge, Brandon Nelson, Makenzie Falcon, Eddie Falcon Jr., Paige Falcon, Reagan Nelson, Gregory Nelson and Colton Nelson; his sister, Harlene Lacher of Lacey, Wash.; and many loving nieces and nephews.

 Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Gertrude; and one sister, Yvonnia Kiefer.

Orville Nundahl

 Oakes, N.D.: Orville Nundahl, 91, of Oakes passed away Nov. 30, 2012, at the Oakes Community Hospital.

 Orville was born in Perry, N.D., on Easter Sunday, March 27, 1921. He was the second of four children born to Christian and Mathilda Nundahl, and they lived in a house Christian built on a farm about 1½ miles north of Rutland, N.D. Orville's father, Christian, managed elevators and their family moved several times, living in Ransom N.D., Jamestown, N.D., and Cayuga, N.D., before settling in Oakes in 1931, when Orville was 10 years old. Orville attended the Oakes Public School and joined the U.S. Army in October 1940. During his five years in service, Orville was stationed at Fort Francis E. Warren in Wyoming, Fort Lewis in Washington, Camp Carson in Colorado, and in New Port News, Va. He was a member of the 188th Field Artillery Regiment and then the 98th Field Artillery Battalion, which was converted to the 6th Ranger Battalion, and they led the invasion of the Philippines. Orville was honored with the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, American Defense Service Medal, a World War II Victory Medal, a Combat Infantry Badge, two Bronze Stars, and was honorably discharged in September 1945. Orville married Betty Borden of Hecla on June 5, 1946. They made their home in Oakes, and were blessed with six children. Orville was very handy with machinery and worked as a mechanic for several years. He also tried some farming, and lastly worked for Shafer Seed Company for 28 years, retiring in 1986. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and was very proud of his service for his country.

 Orville is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty; their six children: LaRita Johnson, Debra (Brian) Benoy, Victoria (Chuck) Colombo, Kim Nundahl, Timothy (Veronica) Nundahl and Tammy Gemar; eight grandchildren: Tara Szurek, Ryan Gallagher, Laura Gustafson, Kevin and Andy Gemar, Myka Ness, Hannah and Christian Nundahl; three great-granddaughters: Destiny and Samantha Anderson and Abigail Johnson; two great-grandsons: Elliott and Liam Gustafson; and one great-great-granddaughter, Jazmin Montes; his sister, Gladys Kluever; a sister-in-law, Grace Albrecht; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Terry Lee; his parents, Christian and Tillie Nundahl; a sister, Inez; a brother, Kenneth; six brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; and two sons-in-law.

 A visitation will be held on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, from 5 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service starting at 7 p.m. at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Oakes. His funeral will be Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Oakes, with burial to follow at the Oakes View Cemetery near Oakes.

Alfrieda R. Schock

 Aberdeen: The funeral service for Alfrieda R. Schock, 94, of Aberdeen will be 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Alfrieda died Nov. 27, 2012, at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen.

 Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

 Alfrieda R. Konrad was born Oct. 12, 1918, to Jacob and Magdelina Konrad in Kulm, N.D. This is the area where she grew up and attended school, graduating from the eighth grade.

 On June 7, 1941, she married Reuben Schock at Ellendale, N.D. They farmed for a number of years in North Dakota before moving to Aberdeen. She worked at the Fanny Farmer candy store for many years and was a maid at the Sherman Hotel and also at private homes. She and Reuben were fond of dancing and spending time with their grandchildren. One of her hobbies was creating Sunday evening dinners for their children and grandchildren. In later years, their daughters cared for her and her husband. Reuben passed away on Oct. 22, 2000. Alfrieda sampled Mother Joseph Manor Assisted Living, but decided she wasn't ready to give up her family. She established her residence back in the Dakota Farmer Building in Aberdeen, where she remained until 2011.

 Alfrieda was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. She loved walking and would walk whenever she could. She also enjoyed flower arranging and freestyle art. Alfrieda especially loved to garden. Her neighbors said her yard work gave them a compliment. She worked diligently and often moved the flowerpots so the wind or hail wouldn't destroy them. Alfrieda was cheerful in all that she did. She was a helper in every way. Her attitude was "where there's a will, there's a way; I'll do whatever I can." The Lord's Prayer was her favorite prayer.

 Her memory lives on with her daughter, Sandra Rivett of Aberdeen; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She will be sorely missed. Daughter Myra Cantu of Westminster Colo., joined Alfrieda in heaven, passing away on Nov. 29, 2012.

 She was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben Schock; daughter, Doreen Bodin; parents, Jacob and Magdelina Konrad; four brothers: David, Emil, Oscar and Otto; and five sisters: Ida Bader, Elsie Bader, Olga Schock, Emma Hildebrand and Tillie Franz.

Frank Zahn Jr.

 Aberdeen: Funeral service for Frank Zahn Jr., 68, of Aberdeen will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Vicki Lust, lay minister, will officiate and Dean Zahn will be the reader. Military rites by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post No. 24.

 There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Monday, with visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

 Frank died Nov. 29, 2012, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

 Frank was born July 22, 1944. He was the son of Marie (Nulle) and Les Rivett. He grew up in Aberdeen, graduating from Central High School with the class of 1962. He entered the U.S. Air Force, where he was a radar operator during the Vietnam War, serving in Pickstown and Alaska. He was honorably discharged in 1964 and returned to Aberdeen. He attended Northern State College and received his bachelor of science in education in 1971.

 He was united in marriage to Dee Anne Minch on June 7, 1968, in First Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen. During college, he worked at Railway Express unloading and delivering rail freight. He began teaching at Hub Area Vocational Center, where he taught for 12 years and during the summers, he was a Head Start teacher. In 1982, Frank began employment with Super 8 Motels Inc. as a quality assurance inspector and later became a motel developer in the U.S. and Canada. He retired in 2008.

 Frank was always a teacher at heart and loved to teach hunting, archery and fishing to someone new. He was a very good friend and would help anyone in need, but foremost, Frank was a family man and the pride he had in his family was always visible on his face.

 Frank was a member of Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post No. 24, Whitetail Bowmen Archery Club, Dacotah Territory Muzzleloaders, Prairie States Traditional Bowhunters and a life member of S.D. Bowhunters Association.

 Frank is survived by his wife, Dee, of 44 years; daughter, Stephanie (Trent) Deyo of Aberdeen; son, Jason (Robyn) Zahn of Kansas City, Mo.; brother, Ted (Rebecca) Zahn of Aberdeen; stepbrother, Ron (Sharon) Rivett of Aberdeen; and four grandchildren: Meghan, Carter, Jake and Mitchell.

 His parents and one brother, David, preceded him in death.

 Honorary casketbearers will be Frank's many friends indoors and out.

 Casketbearers will be Bill Sutton, Dallas Solberg, Gene Herr, Randy Mink, Scott Stewart and Harlow Peterson.

 In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials.

The funeral service for Mae Mildred Frohling, 85, of Aberdeen and formerly of Hecla, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Pastor Craig Grams officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The Lord called Mae to walk with Him in her heavenly home on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

 Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m., with family present from 5-7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Spitzer Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

 Mae Mildred Anderson was born Aug. 17, 1927, to Arvid and Ida (Jumisko) Anderson in Ludden, N.D. This is the area where she grew up and attended school.

 Walter Frohling stole Mae's heart, and the two were united in marriage on the family farm in Hecla, S.D., on Oct. 28, 1945. The family settled in Liberty Township. Seven children were added to this union.

 Mae was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was well liked for her gentle spirit. Mae was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, where she served on the ladies aid, and then Our Savior Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. She served as treasurer of the James Valley Threshing Association for many years. Mae also worked at Frohling's Jack & Jill before retiring and moving to Hecla.

 When her children were younger, Saturday nights were spent at Mae's parents with family enjoying Finnish saunas. Mae enjoyed playing cards, bowling, family gatherings, sewing, crafting, baking, gardening, crocheting and quilting.

 Grateful for having shared Mae's life are her children, Phyllis Hochhalter, Brighton, Colo., Betty (Ward) Gilchrist, Aberdeen, Jerry (Margie) Frohling, Valparaiso, Ind., Renee (Barry) Idler, Aberdeen, Deborah (Skip) Klapperich, Aberdeen, Tamara (Bob) Schweigert, Aberdeen, Terry (Wendy) Frohling, Hecla; sister-in-laws, Louise Babb, Valera Dusel, Regina Frohling; brother-in law, Ernest "Bud" (Elaine) Frohling; 13 grandchildren, nine stepgrandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; and 16 stepgreat-grandchildren; Hanky Martilla and four surviving cousins, Helen Annonen, Margene Hill, Irving Anderson and Ellen Smith.

 She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Frohling; parents, Arvid and Ida Anderson; grandchildren, Michael Hochhalter and Robyn Peterson; sister, Lillian (Frank) Vojkuvka; brothers, Marvin Anderson, Leonard (Evelyn) Anderson, Frank (Mary Ann) Anderson and Jerry Anderson; and sister-in-law, Geneva Anderson.
