Aberdeen: The funeral service for Merle C. Turnquist, 93, of Aberdeen will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at North Highland United Methodist Church in Aberdeen. Pastor Don Peck of Frederick United Methodist Church will officiate.

 Burial will be at Wayside Cemetery, rural Frederick.

 Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.

 Merle died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

 Merle, son of Oscar and Oda (Gronso) Turnquist, was born July 6, 1919, near Frederick. He spent most of his life on the farm his grandfather homesteaded. He attended school in Allison Township. Merle was a partner in the Turnquist Brothers Ranch along with his brother, Dean. They retired in 1997. He became a resident of Bethesda Towne Square in September 1997.

 The work on the ranch was his favorite activity, especially enjoying mending fences. For relaxation he watched movies and television. Merle was a member of Frederick United Methodist Church.

 Merle is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Bertha Turnquist of Aberdeen; niece, Wanda Emery of Aberdeen; and numerous great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews.

 He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Nerene and Leland Pomplun; and two nephews: Duane Pomplun and Chandler Pomplun.

 Casketbearers will be: Darin Emery, Toby Emery, Dan Cutler, Jeff Jones, Lyle Podoll, Don Maunu and Scott Campbell.

 The organist will be Joanne Deloy, and the soloist will be Jack Smith.

 Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory of Aberdeen has been entrusted with arrangements.

Marlin Schmidt

Webster: Marlin Schmidt, 91, of Webster died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at Bethesda Home in Webster.

 His funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at United Methodist Church in Webster. Pastors Eugene and Marilyn Moeller will officiate.

 Burial with military rites will be at Webster Cemetery.

 Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m., and will then continue at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

 Family prefers memorials to the Golden Book of Memories, c/o United Methodist Church, 108 E. 9th Ave., Webster, SD  57274.

 Marlin Howard Schmidt was born Wednesday, April 27, 1921, to Walter and Lydia (Krueger) Schmidt on the family farm near Webster. He graduated from Webster High School in 1939. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in August 1942, and served during World War II.

 He was united in marriage to Verna Prieb on Dec. 20, 1945. After their marriage, the couple made their home on a farm southeast of Webster. Verna passed away Sept. 1, 2012. Marlin was a farmer, businessman, an inventor and entrepreneur.

 Marlin is survived by his children: Marilyn Nelson of Webster, Linda Buchko of Rapid City and Howard (Joni) Schmidt of Loveland, Colo. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Lisa (Tim) Mawdsley and Alyssa of Grimes, Iowa, Dan (Liz) Buchko of Rapid City, Chris Nelson of Whitewood and his son, Stone, Becca Nelson, and Taylor, Camden and Dylan of Redfield,  Matt Buchko of Rapid City and Howie Schmidt (USD) of Vermillion.

 He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers: Duane and Ralph; and one sister, Ferne Grebner.

Mobridge: Funeral services for Lynnard "Nard" Spiry, 45, of Mobridge will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Church.

 Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home.

 Visitation will be on Friday starting at 4 p.m. at Kesling Funeral Chapel, with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m.

 Nard passed away Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012.

 Fargo, N.D.: Robert Emery Peldo, 79, Fargo, passed away Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at Essentia Hospital in Fargo.

 Bob was born Nov. 9, 1933, in Frederick to Arthur and Hilma Peldo. He graduated from Frederick High School and earned his bachelor's degree at Ellendale State Teachers College.

 On Aug. 23, 1953, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Lois Miller, of Monango, N.D.

 Bob began his career in Souris, N.D., as a high school basketball coach and industrial arts teacher in 1956. From teaching, he went into sales and climbed the ladder through management, earning the position of vice president of Scott and Fetzer Inc., a Fortune 500 company.

 After leaving the corporate world, he became a successful self-employed consultant, offering his services in sales and management training, along with customer service training, throughout the tri-state area and beyond.

 After retiring, he was often found on a lake fishing or in his home hobby shop making projects, which he shared with family, friends and charitable organizations. His projects were an inspirational reflection of his strong faith.

 Bob loved the Lord and his family beyond belief. He gave his all to make the world a better place.

 Bob was preceded in death by his mother and father.

 Bob leaves his wife of 59 years, Lois, along with a son, Greg (Meg Spielman) Peldo, Fargo; daughter, Debbie Kammerzell (Don), Littleton, Colo.; grandchildren: Jake (Kristi) Hendricks, Ben (Stephanie) Hendricks, Zach Kammerzell and Maija Peldo; great-grandchildren: Jackson, Kate and Josslyn; brother, John (Connie) Peldo, Frederick; sister, Evelyn Hildebrand, Minot, N.D.; and brother, Howard (Donna) Peldo, Sheridan, Wyo.

 The funeral service will be Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, 215 7th St. S., Fargo, N.D.

 Memorials are preferred to the Fargo YWCA, Young Women Christian Shelter.

Shakopee, Minn.: Kevin R. DeVaan, 56, of Shakopee passed away on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012.

 Kevin was a 1978 graduate of St. John's University and a 1984 graduate of William Mitchell School of Law.

 He is survived by his loving family: wife, Connie; children: Christopher DeVaan, Angela (Michael) Strunk, Brady DeVaan; grandchildren: Aaron Strunk, Lilly Pinkosky-DeVaan; father, Robert DeVaan; siblings: Denise DeVaan and partner Elizabeth Bohun, Debbie (Paul) Hadel, Timothy (Susan) DeVaan, Dominic (Khuzana) DeVaan.

 Mass of Christian burial will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at St. John's Abbey Church, 31802 County Road 159, Collegeville, Minn. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Victoria Catholic Church, 8228 Victoria Drive, Victoria, Minn., and one hour prior to the Mass at the Abbey.

 Kevin had an intense love for his family, friends, and life. He will be missed by all of those he was blessed to know.

 Scottie Gilbert was born Nov. 26, 1964, in Hill City, Kan., to William (Scotch) and Lovina (Frost) Gilbert. They moved to the Promise area in 1971. Scottie went to school in Mobridge, and throughout his life, he worked as a firefighter in the Black Hills, was a cook at the Eagles in Mobridge, where everyone loved his specialty (Scott's Onion Rings). He also worked for Gasco, where he would clean the area stores, and at the same time, held down a daytime job at Deluxe Car Wash in Aberdeen. From there, he went to work at Wal-Mart as a night supervisor over maintenance, where he has worked until the time of his death. Scottie had also worked at Simmons Middle School until it got to be too much working the two jobs. Scottie had been fighting stage four lung cancer and finally lost the battle.

 Scottie married Angela Marie Stango on Oct. 23, 1990, in Selby. They lived in Mobridge, where Scottie and Angel owned a cleaning business for awhile. Shortly after their daughter Sarah was born, they moved to Aberdeen.

 Grateful for having shared Scottie's life are his wife, Angela, daughter, Sarah (Dylon) Johnson, and one grandson Scott Edward Lee Johnson, all of Aberdeen; father, William (Carol) Gilbert, Mobridge; one brother, Bill (Christy) Gilbert, Mobridge; two sisters: Trina Kostad, Helena, Mont., and Cherrie Gilbert, Pierre; one stepbrother, Vernon, of Mobridge; two stepsisters, Christy of Mobridge and Verla of Salem; mother and father-in-law, Tony and Mary Stango of Lowry; brother-in-law, Tony (Steph) Stango, Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

 Scott was preceded in death by his mother, Lovina Gilbert; sister Cheryl in infancy; and his grandparents; Will Gilbert and Ethel Marshall.

 Meme passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

 Ramona Natona "Meme" Freitag was born on Nov. 26, 1929, in Kaylor to Albert and Lea (Link) Freitag.

 She attended and graduated from Scotland High School and went on to receive a bachelor of science degree in education from Augustana College in Sioux Falls.

 Meme taught school in Clarkfield, Minn., and at a naval base in Naples, Italy, before moving to Aberdeen. In Aberdeen, she taught physical education at Simmons Elementary School for over 35 years. She continued to make Aberdeen her home until the time of her death.

 Meme was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and was an extremely active member of Zion Lutheran Church for many years. She was also an avid card player and belonged to many bridge clubs.

 Surviving Meme are her sisters: Carol Van Winkle of Sioux Falls and Eunice Muddiman of Naples, Fla.; six nieces; and two nephews.

 Preceding her in death were her parents.

 Memorials are preferred to Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen.
