 Spearfish: Betty A. (Potts) Klein, 76, of Spearfish and formerly of Gettysburg, passed away Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

 Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at the United Methodist Church, Gettysburg, with Pastor Jeff Adel officiating. Burial will follow in the Gettysburg Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church.

Michael Elmer Maunu 'Snick' Sr.

 Aberdeen: The funeral service for Michael Elmer Maunu "Snick" Sr., 60, of Aberdeen will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial will follow at Savo Cemetery, Frederick. Mike died Saturday, Dec. 15, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen.

 Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

 Michael E. Maunu was born on April 28, 1952, to Lester and Eunice (Blair) Maunu in Aberdeen. He grew up and attended school in Frederick.

 Michael married Patricia Lingor on April 8, 1972, in Aberdeen. He worked for K.O. Lee for over 20 years. Over the years, Michael worked at Dick's West Side and various mechanic shops. He then went to work for Lien's Transportation for several years and Rohly's Bar. Michael was recently working for Aberdeen Asphalt.

 In his younger days, Michael started a country western band. When his children were younger, he served as a leader in the Boy Scouts. He was a lifetime member of the Whitetail Bowmen Archery Club in Aberdeen and was an active member of Salt Lake Lodge in Java. Over the years, Michael built and drove several derby cars. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and many close friends.

 Grateful for having shared Mike's life are his children: Jody (Brad) Schweigert, Huron; Mike (Cathy) Maunu Jr., Aberdeen; Jason (Amanda) Maunu, Aberdeen; and Michelle (Heath) Steineke, Brookings; eight grandchildren: MaKiah Schweigert, Austin Maunu, Alex Maunu, Morgan Maunu, Jordyn Maunu, Bentley Maunu, Jaide Steineke and Kenzie Steineke; one half-sister, Linda McCabe, Moundsville, W. Va.; his brothers and sisters: Debra Maunu, Aberdeen; Bob Maunu, Aberdeen; Wayne Maunu, Aurora, Colo.; Becky Glover, Aberdeen; Cindy Pigors, Aberdeen; and Lisa Maunu, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

 Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Eunice.

Robert Reed Carpenter

 Hoyt Lakes, Minn.: Robert Reed Carpenter, 80, of Hoyt Lakes died Saturday, Dec.15, 2012, peacefully surrounded by his family. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at the Ziemer Moeglein Shatava Funeral Home of Aurora, and one hour prior to the 10 a.m. Wednesday Mass of Christian burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Hoyt Lakes. Fr. Steven Daigle will be officiating. Interment at Hoyt Lakes Cemetery.

 Bob was born Nov. 10, 1932, to Clarence and Bertha (Duncan) Carpenter in Bena, Minn. Bob was a golden gloves boxer in his youth, and graduated from Greenway High School in 1951. He began his career in mining after school, working at the Tioga mine. Bob served in the Korean War in the U.S. Army infantry. After recovering from a war injury in Japan, he returned to the states. He married Florence Mattfeld. Together they began their family in Cohasset, Minn., and later moved to Hoyt Lakes. Bob worked at the West Hill mine until he transferred to Erie Mining Co. in '68. Bob was general foreman of maintenance at Erie until his retirement in 1992 after 40 years of service. He also coached youth hockey, planting the seeds that would later become several Division I hockey players. Bob was also the rec director for Hoyt Lakes Parks Department for many years.

 Bob was a great father and grandfather who worked hard and played even harder. His patriotic, fun-loving spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

 Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 50 years, Florence; son, Scott Carpenter; siblings: Ronald Carpenter and Lois Beaulieu.

 Bob is survived by spouse, Arleen; children: Joe Carpenter of Hoyt Lakes; Barb (Tony) Pollack of Ironwood, Mich.; Reed (Lou) Carpenter of Jasper, Ala.; Jim (Barbie) Carpenter of Elk River, Minn.; Bobbi (Mark) Losure of Mazeppa, Minn.; Becky (Wilson) Walker of St. Paul, Minn.; 17 grandchildren: Christina, Becca, Lizzy, Robbie, Joey, Jill, Joanna, Annette, Carrie, Matt, Sarah, Travis, Amanda, Scott, Clara, Jim and Jake; five great-grandchildren: Adam, Andrew, Ava, Claire and Hartley; siblings: Beth Anderson of Hoyt Lakes; Dave (Julie) Carpenter of Grand Rapids, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 Mass of Christian burial for Herman Kraft, 82, of Timber Lake will be at 11 a.m. MDT, Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake. Burial will be at Timber Lake Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 6 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the church. Herman passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital.

 Herman A. Kraft was born Aug. 23, 1930, to Jacob and Elizabeth (Reis) Kraft in Glencross, the eighth of 16 children. He passed away on Dec. 15, 2012. He attended grade school in Glencross and high school in Timber Lake.

 Herman enlisted in the army in October 1948, and was discharged in October 1949. He was called back into active service in October 1950, and served in Korea. He was discharged in August 1951.

 He married Joyce Majorowicz on Nov. 22, 1951. They made their home in the Timber Lake area, where they were involved in farming and ranching. He worked for the U. S. Postal Service for 37 years as a rural mail carrier, retiring in 1990.

 After retiring, Herman taught himself the art of blacksmithing. He became well known for his Damascus knives and iron crosses. He donated many knives for local benefits and fundraisers. Through the North Dakota and South Dakota Council of Arts, he taught nine students to make Damascus knives and iron crosses. With the help of Ervin Keller, he made iron crosses for 16 unmarked children's graves in the Glencross cemetery.

 Herman was a lifelong learner and teacher. Herman was a great historian. He researched local veterans from World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War because he believed combat veterans were heroes. He did this by phone calls, locating grave markers and knocking on people's doors. He had interest in museums, old cemeteries and history. He was instrumental in building the Museum Blacksmith Shop with Walt Johnson and others. He taught many young people the art of rope making which he really enjoyed. Through his many adventures he made many friends.

 Herman is survived by his wife, Joyce, Timber Lake; his children: Maxine Johnson, Bismarck, N.D., Richard (Caryn), Sitka, Alaska, Kathryn Kraft, Pierre, Karen Kraft, Timber Lake, Alvin (Sherry), Alliance, Neb., and Karyl Kraft (Mary), Minneapolis, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and siblings: Edith Scherer, Marie Klein, Idora Wortman, Helen Bracken, Fred Kraft, Jack Kraft and Dave Kraft.

 Herman was preceded in death by his parents; sons: Michael and Monte; son-in-law, Kevin Johnson; great-grandson, Kayden Kraft; his brothers: Claudia (killed in WWII), Francis "Butch", Tony, Edward, Gene, Andy, Dick; and his sister, Eleanor.

 Herman embraced his faith in God and was a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church, Timber Lake Historical Society and American Legion. He was on the Board of Directors of Western Dakota Bank.

 Herman was a gentle quiet man with a great love for his wife, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His love and time was also given to his siblings, nieces and nephews and all those who called him grandpa and friend.  He was always planning his next adventure and project.
