Martin Lacher was born on Dec. 7, 1922, to Anton and Thresia (Schoch) Lacher at Zeeland, N.D. The family moved to Trail City, and then to Hosmer. Martin joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and spent one year with them in the Black Hills before returning to work on the family farm at Leola.
Martin was united in marriage to Ann Gauer on June 21, 1948, at Aberdeen. To this union a son, Ronald, was born. The family moved from Leola to Aberdeen in 1956. Martin worked at Equity Dairy until it closed. He then worked for Northern State University for 28 years. After retiring, Martin enjoyed taking bus tours, gardening, bird watching and bike riding.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ann Lacher, of Aberdeen; his son, Ronald (Jane) Lacher, of Midland, Mich.; his sister, Alice Geffre, of Aberdeen; his brothers: Joe Lacher of Aberdeen, Frank (Arlene) Lacher of Savage, Minn., and Sebastian (Shirley) Lacher of Bismarck, N.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Helen Heier and Pauline Davis; and one brother, William Lacher.
Milton John Buchholz, 93, of Redfield died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at Golden Living Center in Redfield. His funeral will be Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at 11 a.m. at First Congregational UCC Church in Redfield. The Rev. Tim Fugman will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield.
Visitation will be Friday from 2-7 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield.
Milton was born July 9, 1919, to Edward and Nettie (Miller) Buchholz at Cottonwood Lake. He graduated from Redfield High School in 1937, and married Barbara Bancroft on March 11, 1940, at Webster. They farmed and milked cows, southwest of Cottonwood Lake, until moving into Redfield in 1990. Milton and Barb were avid fisherman, spending many days together fishing at West Whitlock for walleye, salmon and northern. They also fished all the lakes around Redfield, Tulare and Miller.
Milton played basketball and baseball throughout his early adult life and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He was a member of the Wheaton Church before it closed and First Congregational UCC Church while living in Redfield.
Milton is survived by his children: Lorry (Kristi) Buchholz of Redfield, Lynda Wink of Le Mars, Iowa, Mitzi (Gordon) Schroeder of Redfield and Kevin (Mary) Buchholz of Belle Fourche; his grandchildren: Sharla (Blake) Duerre, Kristi (Jim) Martin, Deb (Jay) Esser, Kea Wager, Shawn (Jami) Groft, Kalena (Travis) Fast, Darcy (Gary) Bodiford, Jeff (Lori) Wink, Tracy (Jill) Schroeder, Karen (Kirk) Harrington, Derrick, Thad, Scott (Erika) Buchholz and Hilary (Hunter) Anderson. He is also survived by 35 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren

Funeral services for Phyllis Herrick, Ipswich, will be 3 p.m. Friday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ipswich. Fr. Randy Phillips will serve as celebrant. Burial will be at a later date in the church cemetery.

Phyllis was born May 23, 1925, to Earl and Mary Isabelle (Anderson) Blank on a farm near Ipswich. She attended grade school at Holy Cross Catholic School and graduated from Ipswich High School.
After high school, Phyllis moved to Aberdeen where she worked in retail stores. She married Robert Herrick on July 14, 1945. They made their first home in Ipswich before moving to Hopkins, Minn. in the mid-1950s. While in Hopkins, Phyllis worked as a receptionist at the St. Louis Park Medical Center. The two also maintained a hobby farm retreat at Glen Lake, Minn. They returned to Ipswich in 1979 after Robert retired from SuperValu.
In Ipswich, Phyllis devoted her time to the creation of the J.W. Parmley House Museum. Over the years, she led the effort to expand the museum to include the Parmley Land Office Museum on Main Street Ipswich. She was a tireless promoter of Ipswich and all of its history. She could be found helping with any project that involved town history.
Phyllis' faith was also important to her and she was a proud member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ipswich. She also enjoyed tending to her gardens at their home. Phyllis died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at ManorCare in Aberdeen.
She is survived by her children: Douglas (Patty) Herrick of Howell, Mich.; daughters: Carol Osterhaus of Eden Prairie, Minn., Connie (Curt) Gerke of Lola, Mont.; and Cindy (Janet Carlson) Herrick of Minneapolis; seven grandchildren: Donald Gerke, Brian Gerke, Daniel Herrick, Jennifer Busold, Amelia Herrick- Carlson, Isabel Herrick-Carlson, and Gabrielle Herrick-Carlson; as well as two great-grandsons: Jackson and Landon Busold.
Her parents; husband; son, Donald; grandson, Eric Gerke; two brothers: Dale and Willis; and one sister, Beverly preceded her in death.

James "Jimmy" Hagen, 80, of Webster died on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at Sun Dial Manor in Bristol.
His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at Roslyn Lutheran Church in Roslyn, the Rev. Charles Bunk will officiate. Burial with military rites will be at Roslyn Lutheran Cemetery.

James "Jimmy" William Hagen was born on Saturday, July 16, 1932, to Clarence and Hilda (Reed) Hagen at Peabody Hospital in Webster. The family lived in Grenville Township, south of Roslyn, S.D. He was baptized and confirmed at Roslyn Lutheran Church. He attended school in Roslyn and graduated from Roslyn High School in 1950. After graduation, he farmed with his parents on the family farm. In October 1953, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years until his discharge in 1955, when he returned to the family farm.
On June 29, 1957, he was united in marriage to Barbara Ronshaugen at Roslyn. After their marriage, the couple made their home and farmed the Reed family homestead south of Roslyn. He retired from farming in 1980 and began working at Northside Implement in Webster where he worked for 10 years. Then he worked for Day County Equipment. In 1992, he worked part time for the City of Roslyn until poor health forced him to retire completely several years later. The couple sold the farm in 2005 and moved to Webster. Barbara passed away in July 2012. He entered Sun Dial Manor in June 2012, where he has resided until the present time.
He was a member of Roslyn Lutheran Church, where he served on the Church Council and did volunteer work within the church. He enjoyed woodworking, blacksmithing, welding, collecting old machinery and their cabin at Enemy Swim Lake where he liked to fish.
Survivors include two sons: Scott (Robi) Hagen of Aberdeen and Kent Hagen of Aberdeen; a son-in-law, Sam Reese of Webster; one sister, Judy (Jim) Vogt of Powell, Wyo.; and four grandchildren: Amanda Reese, Tyler Hagen, Annie and Abbie Hagen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a daughter, Cindy; two sisters: Betty Palm and June Martin; and two brothers: Donald and Clayton.

Grace was born on a farm north of Ipswich to William and Mary (Jones) Hawkins on Oct. 24, 1918. When she was 6 years old, the family moved to town, where she attended grade school and high school. Following graduation, she worked as a secretary for the H.E. Beebe Real Estate Company.
Grace married Lawrence Engelhardt in August 1928. They lived in Aberdeen for several years before returning to Ipswich. They then built a house, doing most of the work themselves. She lived in the house until moving to Golden Living Center in 2011.
When the children were all in school, she went to work for F.E.M Electric Association as a private secretary to the manager. After 28 years, she retired to travel with Lawrence and they toured most of the United States before deciding to spend their winters in Arizona. They were snow birds for 20 years, spending most of that time in Lake Havasu, Ariz.
During her life, she enjoyed playing the piano, and could play by ear any song she heard. She also enjoyed dancing, bowling, biking and playing cards with friends. She was an excellent cook as well as baker and, whenever her children came home for a visit, she always had their favorites waiting. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Altar Society and the Legion of Mary.
Grace died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at Golden Living Center in Ipswich.
Grace is survived by one daughter, Myrle (John) Lake of Hemet, Calif.; two sons: Roger (Cheryl) Engelhardt of Black Hawk and Jim (Sharon) Engelhardt of Aurora, Colo. She had 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; her parents, William and Mary Hawkins; two brothers: Albert and Francis (who died in infancy); and one sister, Blanche.

Orval passed away Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, at ManorCare Health Services in Aberdeen.
Orval Leland Zoellner was born March 21, 1925, in Groton to Roger and Hazel (Jost) Zoellner. He attended Joan of Arc country school, always riding his pony for transportation, and graduated from Groton High School with the Class of 1943. Following graduation, Orval farmed with his father until 1950, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He received his honorable discharge, at which time he returned to Groton to farm with his father.
Orval was united in marriage to Irene Joyce Mullner on Oct. 20, 1951, in Aberdeen. (The only time he ever missed the opening day of pheasant hunting season.) He continued to farm with his father until 1956, when Orval and Irene purchased their own dairy farm, which they ran until his retirement in 1995. The couple was blessed with seven children and shared nearly 55 years of marriage before Irene passed away in April 2006.
Orval was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of the Fin and Feather Sportsmen Club of Groton. He was also a huge supporter of 4-H and enjoyed driving around the countryside enjoying nature. Above all, Orval loved his grandchildren. They were the highlight of his life.
Surviving Orval are his children: Vicki (Rodney) Wiley of Groton, Lee (Janet) Zoellner of Beloit, Wis., Neil (Penny) Zoellner of Clinton, Wis., Nila (Ron) Christensen of Webster, Arlin (Cindy) Zoellner of Conde, Joel (Lynn) Zoellner of Groton and Crystal (Allen) Hageman of Gettysburg; one sister, Vivian Sletten of Aberdeen; 16 grandchildren: Melinda (Jonathan) Swatkowski, Elizabeth (Calvin) Kunkle, Michael (Abbie) Zoellner, Scott Zoellner, Jennifer Zoellner, Julia (Jason) Keeler, Ellie Zoellner, Jacob (Holly) Christensen, Linse (Clay) Lundberg, Delci Christensen, Casey Zoellner, Katie Spicer, Hayden Zoellner, Bridget Hageman, Colten Hageman and Alyson Hageman; and five stepgrandchildren: John (Lana) Phillips, Jerry (Kathy) Phillips, Jim (Lynn) Phillips, Dominic Wiley and William Wiley.

Eureka: The memorial service for Earl E. Krein, 85, of Eureka will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at Eureka Reformed Church. The Rev. Richard Stetler will officiate.

Earl Eugene Krein was born in Eureka, McPherson County, on March 2, 1927, to Julius and Rosa (Opp) Krein. He was baptized on April 24, 1927, at Calvin Reformed Church by the Rev. Diedrich Buelter and, on June 15, 1941, was confirmed at the Hosmer Reformed Church by the Rev. Walter Grossman.
On Oct. 19, 1947, Earl was united in marriage to Gertrude Werre of Eureka at Zion Lutheran Church, with the Rev. P.A. Hinrichs officiating.
Earl received his grade school education in Stickel Township and Eureka Public School. He graduated from Eureka High School in 1945. He participated in basketball and football while in high school and was Homecoming king.
Earl spent his entire adult life engaged in farming, for many years in partnership with his father, farming the land homesteaded by his grandfather, Frederick Krein, who came to the United States and McPherson County from Russia in 1885. Later, Earl and son, Gary, operated the cattle and grain farm in partnership.
Earl and his wife lived at the Krein homestead for 30 years, then purchased a home in Eureka and moved to Eureka in 1977.
Earl served as a school board member in Stickel Township, was a Jaycee, a member of Eureka Development Corporation, served on the ASC Committee, zoning board, Eureka Chamber of Commerce, was a county commissioner for approximately 11 years and belonged to the Eureka Country Club. He was a member of the Eureka Reformed Church and served as an elder and taught Sunday school. He was proud of his children and grandchildren.
Earl was known for his expertise in making German pork sausage and shared it with family and friends. He enjoyed playing cards and played golf.
Earl is survived by his wife, Gertrude; daughter, Sandy (Glenn) Opp; son, Gary (Nancy) Krein; grandchildren: Damon Opp, Jordan (Tawny) Opp, Julius Dean "J.D." Krein and Hilary M. Krein; brother, Ted (Juanita) Krein; and sister-in-law, Kathryn Krein.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Dean Krein.
The organist will be Esther Grosz, and soloist will be Charles Koerner.

Claire L. Hanning was born July 26, 1936, in Pollock to Harley and Edith (Boschker) Hanning. She attended school in Pollock and, in December 1952, she married Maynard Martin in Pollock. After their marriage they moved to a farm located east of Ashley, N.D. In 1957, they returned to South Dakota and farmed the Martin homestead near Mound City.
In 1982, they moved to Dickinson, N.D., where Claire worked at Ivanhoe Hotel and Restaurant, later moving to Aberdeen to be near their family. Claire worked at the Starlite Café. In 1996, she and Maynard moved to Mobridge, where they worked at Bargain Mart until 2005. Maynard died Jan. 12, 2006. In 2007, Claire retired and moved back to Aberdeen to be near her family.
Claire is survived by her children: Daniel (Shelley) Martin of Hermosa, Robert (Dona) Martin of Bow of New Hampshire, Linda (Jon Paggett) Aberle of Aberdeen, Bruce (Cheryl) Martin of Aberdeen and Timothy (Rosemary) Martin of Mina; sister-in-law, Ilse Hanning of Lemmon Grove, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters; one brother; and one grandson, Douglas Aberle.
